Hi guys, yesterday I was back into the gym after a short time out, It was legs day so I was squatting, dead lifting the normal kind of exercises, but now this morning I have a kind of sharp shooting pain in my spine erectors, every time I take a step or stretch I get this. I'm no stranger to muscle soreness after a workout but I'm pretty sure this is not normal. The only thing I did that I think may have caused of it was going for a 1 rep max on my deadlift, I had my belt on and I'm pretty sure my form was spot on(the guys I train with wouldn't of let me continue if my form was off). Does anybody have any ideas what it could be? I'm pretty worried its going to affect my training if its sore when I walk I doubt I'll be able to lift!

P.S I've just realised the title makes no sense, I'm not the smartest guy :P

Rest (and ice pack to reduce swelling if appropriate) - sounds like you've got a soft tissue injury and you shouldn't lift until it is healed. Even without poor form you can still overtrain a muscle and cause microtrauma to the fibres or inflame or rupture connective tissue.

If you have a trainer / coach / pe staff you can consult I'd speak to them if in doubt.

Thanks, Do you have any idea how long something like that takes to heal?

Depends on what you've injured and how badly. I hurt my back and it took several weeks before I could exercise again (this was doing ballet when I was younger). For something that's painful but not stopping you moving around you should find about a week away from using that muscle group is a rough estimate.

You'll have to be patient and listen to your body. Just remember that if you do too much too soon and re-injure yourself you'll have to take at least the same amount of time off again.

But remember I'm not qualified and can't examine you - if you want to know for sure, you'll have to see a doctor or physio or something in person.

That's better than I thought its going to be a week before legs day again anyway:P I'll be more careful next time,
Thanks for all your help:D!

I'm assuming you are doing the bent knee type deadlifts.

I had the same problem until I started using blocks that put the bar farther up off the floor and there went my back pains.

Yeah, I was training legs so maybe blocks could work for me then I could try lighter weight stiff leg deads for my lower back when I'm training back. Only problem is I won't be able to get as full a range on my reps. Thanks for your reply though:)

You're welcome :)
I just thought of something have you tried stiff legged deadlifts yet?
