Teenager's stomach removed after drinking cocktail

By Amy Gladwell

A teenager has had emergency surgery to remove her stomach after drinking a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen.

Lancashire Police say Gaby Scanlon was out with friends in Lancaster last Thursday (4 October) when it happened.

The 18-year-old is reported to have become breathless and developed severe stomach pain before being taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Officers say she would have died if doctors had not performed the operation.

This was one of those 'smoking' cocktails like people might see for halloween so please be careful!

Who would be that fucking stupid to do that! If you knew it had liquid nitrogen in it, a sane person wouldn't drink it.

If someone gave it to her, she still shouldn't have drank it.

LN 2 makes great icecream, but don't put it in a cocktail!

It sounds more like negligence on an employee's part. I assume nobody would've knowingly given it to her, and she wouldn't've knowingly drank it. Then again, that's what an investigation is for.

People really need to be more careful. The poor girl...

Liquid Nitrogen is sometimes used in food for the affect and was part of the drink. I think that's right.

Quite a shocking incident really.

Its the fact that the liquid nitrogen makes the drink look great which makes people drink it. This wasn't the first drink she'd had, so there is a possibility that she was already slightly drunk.

There is also the chance that she was unaware what damage that the Liquid nitrogen could do to her.

I heard on the news that the bar that sold the drink has stopped selling cocktails with dry ice

Frankly, liquid nitrogen isn't meant to be ingested so I'm still trying to grasp as to why anyone thinks putting it in a drink is a fantastic idea in any way. Oh how pretty! Mmm toxic gas!
Is the alcohol industry really so vain we're fine with risking health to have pretty beverages? That poor girl, on her 18th birthday too.

The gas isn't toxic, just very cold (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19870668). Its become very popular in the food industry as a 'special effect'.

I agree completely with your sentiments, but then people have been eating stupid things (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/392614/20121009/edward-archbold-dies-insect-eating-contest-florida.htm) (including gold, codfish sperm, caterpillars etc.) for thousands of years.

I'm starting to think this the same as the old problem of food hygeine in the industry: poorly trained individuals not following correct process and putting peoples health and lives at risk.

lol, this isn't a reason NOT to drink, this is a reason not to accept a drink from certain people. There's been a few times where some of my friends slipped a roofie into wine and gave it to me; yeah, it was a joke, but that's not a reason to not drink totally. Don't accept drinks from complete strangers, or even people you know but don't fully trust, because this stuff DOES happen.

The poor girl. I heard about this somewhere else and it's really just horrific that any licensed bar would allow its employees to serve a drink like that.

LN2, would'a been a bit chilly...
But seriously, who in their right mind would do that? It's stupid.
