View Full Version : Throwing style

I don't know what kind of advice or suggestions I might get for this, but all my life, I've been made fun of for how I throw. People laugh at me and say I throw like a girl, and it is true. It isn't that I am bad at it. When ever I am playing softball or anything else like that, I can throw the distance and accurately, but I know I have kind of a 'limp-wristed throwing style.' (Heard that line on Revenge of the Nerds on TV and reminded me of me.)
Do you think there is anyway I could work to change this? I only notice it when I'm throwing a small ball. If it's something bigger like a football, I'm ok, but if I could work on it, I would like to, but its kind of hard to practice throwing in front of a mirror or something like that.

Some people can be so immature you know. They're probably really jealous that you can throw much better than most people (after all, accuracy and distance is what counts at the end of the day).
But if your throwing style bothers only YOU, then maybe try copy the style of some professional cricket players.

I know Teejay, and to be honest I even felt immature putting this up here, but it is something I've always kind of had at the back of my mind. I try to keep the cricket players in the back of my mind, and when I'm practicing it's all good, but in the heat of the moment, all the practice goes out the window!

Are YOU uncomfortable with your throwing style (or have others made you feel that way) ? If you're ok with it, then it doesn't matter. Look at Lasith Malinga for example. His style of bowling is fucked up, but it doesn't matter because of the amazing results he achieves with it.

Excellent posts Teejay. Nick - there is so much going on in terms of biomechanics, muscle control etc when you throw. As a unique individual what works for someone else may not work for you: if your throw is working and getting the results, I really wouldn't mess with it without getting professional coaching advice.
I certainly wouldn't worry about appearances as Teejay already said. Stereotypes about girls and gays not being able to throw are just a load of macho crap (the highlights I saw of the womens T20 England Australia match looked like a good game).

Throw how ever you feel comfortable throwing, and if they don't like it when they get to bat peg them once or twice ...but make it look like an accident!
Thats what a cousin of mine this and when the softball bounced off the bat and peged the guy so hard in the head he dropped, they stopped.

If you're throwing something like a baseball, try bringing your arm back more and extending more when throwing. Think like a baseball pitcher and try some windups like theirs.

If the problem is in the wrist, I'm having trouble picturing what you mean when you say "limp wristed", but I would take a tennis ball, stand about 3 feet away from the wall and throw it off the wall, catch, and repeat.
At first be very deliberate, try "snapping" your wrist instead of throwing with your arm. Pick up speed with this wrist motion until you are satisfied that you have it down. Then it should be easier to translate the wrist snapping motion into your full delivery.
Of course, if that doesn't work just go back to what's been working for you and screw everyone else, lol :)

It isn't so much limp wristed... I just mentioned that because I happened to hear it in a movie.
Good advice all round, and I even got some laughs from you. Thanks everyone. As I said, I know this shouldn't bother me, but whether or not it should, it does.

when you say limp wristed do you mean when you arm extends and you have thrown the ball you're hand whips on completely down toward the ground?

Try to put your legs into it. Say you're throwing with ur right hand, step your right foot, then left then right, and let the ball go as the right foot comes down the second time.

Well I don't know if it's the same in Cricket or whatever sport, but when I was younger in baseball, I threw the ball side armed. So my coach had me take a tennis ball, and throw it against a wall, making me touch my toe every time I threw. I now can throw one of the meanest fastball's ever :P
