In the 1600's and probably before and shortly after, there were laws that said people could be punished if they did not agree with the opinions (including religion) of officials. If there were laws like this in your country and there was an atheist in office, how do you think it would affect society? If in the 1600's the king of England was an atheist, how do you think it would have affected their society? Do you think there would be less religion or more acceptance of other religions? Would the Puritans/Separatists/Catholics have gotten along better?
I personally think it depends on what kind of atheist it is. If it was a radical atheist in charge there would very much be less religion, but if it was a more moderate atheist I think there would be more religious tolerance. Rather than being punished for being religious its more likely you would be punished for not being respectful of another persons religion.
