We dont all the time.. But the majority do you actually listen to them or do you just like the music/song for the sounds. I mean I hate pop, yeah I like the music its peppy but the lyrics are crap! They are meaningless, empty and just blah! So I dont listen to it, I get really focused on songs and the lyrics especially so I lean to grunge and country with substance. But have you and do you listen to them? Look em up sometime or listen to them and see if the song is different.

I listen to the lyrics especially in Nirvana, Led Zeppelin or Beatles songs. I generally hate songs that do not have meaningful lyrics, to me they are quite boring and bland.

Yeah, I listen to the lyrics of songs. Sometimes, if I'm really enjoying a song I will try and find the lyrics of that song online just so I can get a better understanding of them.

Yeah lyrics are very important to me in a song, of course I like it to sound good, but to me good written lyrics with meaning are just about as important. So that's probably why I like just Rock and Heavy Metal songs and shit like that. I don't care what anybody says, none of the lyrics in modern day pop have deep meaning, at least that's my opinion.

It really is a bit of both for me.

If I don't like the tune then the lyrics really don't matter to me as music is all about the tune first in my opinion. However if I like the tune then I listen to the words carefully. However if I don't like the tune but the lyrics are really good and meaningful then yeah. I guess I sit on the fine line between both tune and lyrics.

Of course. That is what makes a song what it is. Lyrics. Without lyrics it's just bleh.

A song is supposed to tell a story. If the lyrics suck, what kind of story is being told? Exactly.

The lyrics matter to a certain degree. Is it has a really good tune then I won't care about the lyrics a lot but lyrics do help my like to listen to a song more

Yeah, I listen to the lyrics. It only gets tough when the song is in another language :P (one time I looked up the words to a Rammstein song... never again. *shudders*)

I don't pay much attention to lyrics. If the music is good, it tells a story anyway (the story depends on how you perceive the music of course). That's why I really enjoy listening to classical/baroque/romantic piano pieces. I don't need words to appreciate music.

One band in particular whose lyrics are very important to me are Bon Jovi. I really just listen to and connect with their lyrics much more than any other band. With bands such as KISS, Judas Priest, or just other heavy metal bands, the lyrics aren't as important to me because most of the time they don't really mean anything. There are exceptions of course, but I really listen to those bands for the music over the lyrics.

lol you must be 8 if you actually think this. Lyrics shouldn't even be a main point in listening to music when the majority of what you're hearing is the instruments. The only lyrics that actually tell a story are progressive rock lyrics, which often revolve around complex topics and old folk legends. Shit man, listen to some early Genesis songs like Supper's Ready, The Musical Box, The Knife, and The Fountain of Salmacis. You probably think Queen's lyrics tell stories.

it really depends on the song im listening to. i dont really care about the lyrics of say a kesha song but it doesnt mean im not going to enjoy it. but i will get into the lyrics of a song written by an established singer songwriter.

as some people have said music doesn't need lyrics to be appreciated. look at classical and instrumental pieces - you don't need lyrics to know it is good.

He lyrics are the best bit, why would you just overlook them? I often go and search up lyrics or find lyrics videos. I love the words to a song, if they're good they make the song that much better.

Lyrics are most important to me when it comes to music, I can overlook a bad tune if the lyrics are good.

I love the negative rep this post is getting. If any of you really think lyrics are the most important part of a song, you've completely ignored the other hard work gone into the writing of the actual music.

Well, when I hear a song for the first time, first thing i notice and care about is the music. So, if I like it i check out the lyrics.

With out it, its Dubstep.

I listen to and even make Dubstep, and there are many different styles of Dubstep, so in a heavy, more American style dubstep song, the lyrics, which are of course usually just a few cuss words, they help to emphasize the song, and add another element other than heavy amorphous sounds, but in more sing song type stuff like Mt. Eden, they are actually meaningful and deep

I don't think lyrics are important for SOME genres. For instance hip-hop; the lyrics have to be good. They can help you connect to a writer, and how they're feeling but I don't listen to a song for its lyrics or put it on the line on whether it sounds good or not. In fact there are a lot of instrumental artists out there who express emotion through their music without the need for lyrics(and singing obviously)
As long as the music itself sounds great I couldn't care less for the lyrics

It actually depends on the Genre and/or why I'm listening to the song..for example if I am going to sing it then definitely the lyrics are critical and as well as doing choreography that way you know when and where to put moves in..but if I'm just freestyling or breakdancing then nope..:D

You're also forgetting that they also put hard work into the lyrics as well. The lyrics and music are equally important in a song.

I definitely listen to the lyrics of a song. The lyrics can tell things that the music cannot. Some kinds of music are richer in music and some are richer in lyrics it doesn't mean one is superior. I think Hip-Hop is my favorite genre lyrics-wise. Sometimes I will see a comment on youtube comparing the lyrics of Tupac to those of Justin Beiber, while I'm not a fan of Beiber i dont like this comparison, Beiber's music is driven vocal melodies while Tupac's is all about the lyrics. Saying Tupac is so much better than JB is like saying pizza is way better than ice cream. I don't like Justin Beiber very much though...

i listen to the lyrics, and i agree pop has terrible lyrics that make no sense most of the time. Although I dont like the music i dont mind some artists that actully write their own stuff.

Generally I don't listen to the lyrics. I usually bounce along to the tune and that's it. Sometimes I get surprised when I actually do listen to and think about what's happening in these lyrics I've been mindlessly singing along to for all these years.

That's the weird thing. I sing along, and I quote lines from songs all the time, but without kind of actively listening. That is, I know all the words, but don't really think about them.

Why are some saying rap needs good lyrics?
Most of the popular rap hits are about "bitches", money and ofcourse some bragging.

I would say both but I'm more into the lyrics side. Like everyone is saying. Songs are meant to tell a story or a lesson to the listeners. And there a lack of lyricism in today's music. I listen to underrated people like George Watsky and Wax, they're very underrated but they're music have deep meanings. "Artists" like Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber, I don't get how they became famous. For Justin Bieber, I guess it's his voice and his feminine looks but his lyrics (no offence to those who loves him) sucks.

>people think music needs lyrics

If anything lyrics makes everything cheesier and IMO not everyone is a poet. Sorry to say it. I'd rather people sing in a different language, which is pretty much what I do most of the time.
