If by depressing you mean, spirit-uplifting-wonderful-amazing thing, then yes, very much so. C: I love my Anime.

Anime ftw

it can get depressing, depending on the genre you watch. I watch alot of sci-fi love story, mecha anime, so I don't see alot of depressing anime.

One Piece is so sad, its made me shed more tears than the many anime of watched in a while now.

Not so much sad but they do have sad moments don't they. I like Mirai Nikki sorta stuff, don't really like Mecha and fantasy.

Yes. Anime tends to be more serious than most american cartoons. Being as our cultrues are different, different things are allowed in. Fruits Basket was aimed at Young Teens/Pre-teens in Japan and contains: Self harm, Child abuse, Transgender and Self hate. A show like that in America would be aimed at older teens or young adults.
What you see, and how serious it is, all depends on genre.

They can be, there is a lot of drama and sadness but there is also a fair balance of action and humour within it as well, like for example One Piece, it just really comes down to which anime your watching.

The only anime/manga I like I wouldn't consider depressing, but I only really like FLCL, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Anime and manga are mediums, not genres. They can't rationally be called one thing or the other.

It all depends on the type of anime/manga you're watching/reading. Sure, some can be sad, but you can't categorize them all as depressing because of one.

Are they any good?

Well, was Hellraiser series good? Some say yes, some says no. It depends on what you are reading or watching.

Some has an interesting plot. Some has a mature theme. Some has advanced illustrations. Some are known as Gekiga instead of Manga. Some people like Junji Ito, and some like Shintaro Kago instead.
