For some reason a lot of people don't like Nickelback, personally I think they are pretty good, they have good lyrics/music videos. Opinions?

Yeah I agree with you, I think they're pretty good. I honestly can't see why somebody wouldn't like them. Their lead vocalist Chad Kroeger gets bashed a lot too, I don't know why, he is fucking awesome. It could be because they're mainstream, and people like to hate on mainstream bands for some reason, but out of today's music, I think they're one of the best bands right now.

I don't mind them but they aren't that great in my opinion, I went to one of their concerts when I was ten and it wasn't bad. They have a few good songs.

Personally I've always wanted to know why most people have such a strong hate for Nickelback. It was one of the most searched for things on Google one time I looked lol.

I think they're good. Their music is a nice break from the heavier, faster stuff I listen to. Sure, some of it is mindless bimbo stupid lyric stuff which I try and skip as fast as I can (S.E.X, Animals, Shankin' Hands ect.) but some of it can be pretty meaningful and it's soothing to listen to.

So on September 11th 2001, a terrible tragedy occured... Well okay TWO terrible tragedies, but by FAR, the worst of these tragedies has to be the release of Silver Side Up by Nickelback!!! I mean c'mon, anyone mature enough to listen to real music knows just how bad Nickelback are. Somehow they've actually managed to sustain a 15 year career, but as soon as they broke to the mainstream with this album, they quickly became a trademark for laughably bad songwriting, unbelievable amounts of cliche and indistuingashable, unoriginal tame rock and metal songs. Nickelback are now the poster boys of post grunge. A genre known for incredibly stale and shitty, unimaginative bands that do little more than try and ride on the success of the great grunge bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. This lead to our subpar versions of these bands, namely Nickelback, Creed, Godsmack and Theory of a Deadman to name a few. There were some bands that had a little more imaginative songwriting, such as Seether, Alter Bridge and Staind, but still these bands had very little commercial staying power, I mean who really still follows these bands closely?! Nickelback do still bring in the album sales to be fair, but then there are a lot of 12-15 year olds out there!

So who was it that broke this hideous band into the mainstream? ROADRUNNER RECORDS?! The fuck?! Okay so they also brought us lame bands like Trivium, Soulfly and hey, Theory of a Deadman, remember those guys?! But Roadrunner mainly have a great track record for signing quality metal bands, I mean thanks to Roadrunner we've enjoyed the delights of Fear Factory, Sepultura, Death, Cynic, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Type O Negative, Machine Head... And they've even recently snapped up some great bands like Opeth, Megadeth, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater. So it's pretty safe to say, that with 20 years of experience at this point, Roadrunner Records know the difference between good metal and STINKY, SHITTY ASS VOMIT LIKE NICKELBACK!!! SO WHAT THE FUCK ROADRUNNER?! Were you under pressure to back some mindless garbage commercial bullshit band?! Were you just jumping on the nu-metal, post-grunge bandwagon?! Did you even listen to this band before you signed them?! Well I remember reading in Kerrang! at the time (you know, shortly before they stopped caring about real metal also) and Roadrunner said that Nickelback may be a hard rock band, but they fit perfectly into a metalhead's collection. I can't reproduce the exact quote, but I'm fairly sure this was their belief. Ok fair enough, except that I don't know ANY metalhead who listens to the aforementioned Roadrunner metal legends and can unironically listen to fucking Nickelback! They don't even deserve to use the electricity that powers their instruments! I seriously can't comprehend or begin to justify Roadrunner's decision to market a band like Nickelback. I mean they could have seriously risked killing their own reputation. Maybe that's why they started snatching up underground cult metal acts around this time.

So... WHY THE HELL DO I OWN THIS?!?! I dont remember exactly. Maybe I got it as a present or off some pissed off metalhead who couldn't stand to have it in their possession? But I do remember I was like 13 or 14 at the time when I got it. But even then I was smart enough to realise that the "How You Remind Me" song that kept playing on Kerrang!TV was COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE!!! I mean that song is so bad, that on their next album they had a song called "Someday" that used the exact same chords, rhythm and structure, just in a slightly different key! There are even hilarious youtube videos giving evidence by playing both songs on top of each other, and they sync up! That's right, this band are so lousy at writing songs, THEY ACTUALLY MANAGED TO RIP THEMSELVES OFF!!! Either way I remember giving the album a fair few listens through over the years, but I've always been unimpressed with the thing. So it's not just a bandwagon that I'M jumping on, this album really does suck donkey balls. So remember, I've done myself the displeasure of listening to and reviewing this album so that YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!!

So what's wrong with this album exactly? Wow, I don't even know where to begin, so this is the perfect time for an uncontrollable, uncensored steam of conciousness rant! *Deep breath* The album is a marathon of unimaginitive, unoriginal and boring songs with bland riffs and extremely predictable structures. Nickelback make the most cliche hard rock songs imaginable. Comprising of third, fourth and fifth rate, phoned in riffs that wouldn't even be found on even the worst AC/DC albums. They are obviously trying to recapture the sound and success of 90s grunge bands like Nirvana, but resort to only the most basic and primitive elements of what came before them. Imagine a Nirvana or Pearl Jam song, but devoid of any intensity, originality, energy, inspiring lyrics or intuitive ideas and instrumental chemistry. If you've heard one song on this piece of shit, you've heard them all, and you've heard every Nickelback album. In fact the songs on here become indistuingishable, and it's really easy to zone out when you listen to the album in one sitting. The only memorable songs are the singles that have been overplayed to death on the radio and the music channels. The lyrics are little more than pseudo macho angst ridden bullshit. The wordplay is about as competent as a primary school kid's first attempts at poetry. Even though some of the songs intend to have a message, such as "Never Again" being a comment on domestic violence, their use of metaphor, symbolism and personal experience seems to be done just for the hell of it, and the message isn't sincere, and has been covered in a much better form, many times before. Wow, that was a mouthful!

So you might argue, what's wrong with Nickelback's music being poppy, commercial, not that heavy and aimed at teenagers? Well there is nothing wrong with that, but it shouldn't be an excuse for unimaginative and dull songwriting. The fact is that so many of the songs on this album alone, as well as their entire catalogue suffer from so many of the aforementioned problems that their continued existence in the Roadrunner discography becomes more and more inexcusable with each album that passes. I mean at the time of writing this they have released 3 albums after this on Roadrunner, along with re-releases of the first two albums that weren't originally on Roadrunner. That's SIX FUCKING ALBUMS!!! AND NONE OF THEM HAVE SHOWN AN INCH OF MUSICAL PROGRESS!!! How do Roadrunner continue to justify this? Oh that's right, because they are probably the bestselling artist in their whole repertoire! Because we live in a sick, twisted world where this kind of unartistic, mindless drivel outsells real music that requires actual talent 10 to 1. So Roadrunner are skint enough to keep letting Nickelback make albums, and Nickelback are greedy enough to keep making the same shitty album over and over, knowing there will always be a flock of musically shallow and inexperienced teenagers (and horrifyingly adults too) willing to buy their merchandise and show tickets. But hey at least Roadrunner can escape the situation with SOME dignity, I mean at least the money they make off Nickelback's album sales keeps them in business and able to promote REAL metal bands, but they still have to go to sleep at night knowing they are responsible for unleashing this monster upon the universe, this vaccuum of raw talent and genius art in music. But Nickelback remain as redundant now as they were on this album.

So are there ANY redeeming qualities at all? Barely. The only thing less interesting and engaging would be some shitty noisecore band's demo tape, but hey at least they're somewhat challenging and daring. Perhaps the only thing worse would be some pretentious shut in, locked inside his bedroom at his mum's house, rushing out a homemade ambient album every week. But in case you don't know any artists like that, then yeah, this is about as bad as it gets. At least hard rock music and mainstream rock music rarely gets much worse. In the right mood the very least that Silver Side Up achievies is that it is endurable. It's not a really long album so it is possible to sit through it. But it's still boring, uncreative, unchallenging and unmemorable. If you happen to be able to enjoy this album unironically, then you should give yourself a pat on the back. You've achieved something that I'll never be able to achieve. And if it's actually possible that Nickelback are actually capable of touching the lives of some people out there, then great! But I'm just here to tell it like it is. And for me, Nickelback is about as low as music really gets. At the very least it may be a little stopgap artist to enjoy before you end up discovering better artists like Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the grunge scene, or Metallica and Black Sabbath in the metal realm. But seriously, if you STILL find Nickelback a relevant band, then I seriously advise you to go on a journey of musical discovery. And if Nickelback are still going strong in 10 years time... I'LL EAT MY OWN SHIT!!!

I'LL EAT MY OWN SHIT!!!

people: NOBODY SAYS WHY THEY HATE NICKELBACK OJGDFGJDFKGJDFKL THEY'RE SO GODO GIMME A GODOOD D REASNON!!!!!!!

you give them a reason

tl;dr

NICKELBACK RULES LOL THIS IS HOW YOU REMIND ME HOW DURRRRRRRR
I read it all, calm down. I can understand some of where you're coming from, everyone has different opinions, they're far from being the best band in my opinion but then again, everyone has different tastes in music. I think people should read the post, the sarcasm throughout makes it very entertaining even if someone doesn't agree with what's written.

I don't hate them nearly as much as I should. Yes, they are at times unbearably cheesy and manufactured, but I do like them for some reason. Not so much their pop stuff, but their hard rock and metal stuff is good. Sue me.

There are worse bands, but I don't like Nickelback very much, it's supposed to be post grunge but it's more "pop" than rock, and I don't like the vocalist's voice :p

Well I respect your opinions. But they are far from pop, listen to "This Means War" or "Side of a Bullet" or "Burn it to the ground" , those are Heavy Metal/Hard Rock songs. I think when you say "pop" I think you're referring to their lighter songs, but I would say thats either Alternative or Soft Rock. I also kinda get pissed when people say "The Beatles" are pop too, their shit was hard heavy ass rock, just like Nickelback.

When I said that Nickelback was "pop", I said pop like industrial, I don't know how to explain and I don't dislike pop music, I just don't like that industrial pop. Ok, I can try listening these songs, I don't hate Nickelback, I just don't like their music very much, it's not my style.

And really, Beatles were never that industrial pop we see nowadays because they existed in the 60's. In fact, the first Beatles songs, like "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", are pop, but not a bad kind of pop because Beatles kind of invented the (good) pop music. You can't compare Beatles to Nickelback because Beatles are much older and they were kind of the begin of many things (it's said that "Helter Skelter" was the first metal song ever, so, heavy metal/hard rock wouldn't exist if The Beatles never had existed).

But ok, that's just my opinion

Relax,I wasn't comparing them, even though I like both bands, The Beatles are way better, no doubt. I was just saying that I don't like when people call Nickelback pop, or The Beatles pop, because I fucking hate pop. The only thing I was saying is that I hate when people call those bands 'pop' bands, so really I wasn't comparing them.

Ok I see what you're saying, when I said they weren't pop, I was thinking of songs like "Helter Skelter" "Come Together" and "Revolution". So now I see what you mean, if any of their songs are labeled "pop" then it's the "good" kind of pop, not this mainstream pop bullshit.

I don't listen to them a whole lot, but when their songs come on, I enjoy them very much! I don't see anything wrong with them!

I have only listened to Rockstar or whatever it is called and I like that but since I haven't listened to any of the other works on it then I don't really have a stance I guess.

You should listen to more of their songs if you think that. The song "lullaby" by Nickelback is the first song that came to my mind that has meaning. Maybe you should listen to more of their music before you decide to talk shit.
