When it comes to embattled cities, Detroit has suffered more than most - with a dramatically declining population, crumbling industries and homes and buildings abandoned.
The Michigan city has lost 60 per cent of its population since the 1950s - around one million residents - when the city was America's fourth largest and the thriving hub of car industry and Motown music.
The striking images which document the changes in Detroit were taken by photographer Camilo José Vergara over a period of 25 years.

is so sad to see what is happening all over. an older guy I know told me their youth pastor just took a full time Pastor position in Detroit. Also I have a VT friend that lives north of Detroit makes me wonder about his future.

Wow, this is kind of depressing. It's like the sadness of seeing a ghost town without all the cheesy wild west bullshit.

It's funny how much things can change in just 50 years... When my mom was growing up, Detroit and Gary, and even my own town, were HUGE in car manufacturing, and there were jobs-a-plenty. Then the companies just kind of... left. Shipped jobs elsewhere for cheaper, and everything fell apart. Populations fell and the cities slowly became abandoned. Until the only thing left was a hollow shell of its former glory. Seeing those pictures kind of reminds me of hearing stories about my town back when it was flourishing and had jobs, and makes me wonder what happened...
