View Full Version : -Rep convensions?

Are there any conventions regarding -rep? Like...raising your concerns via a post before -repping, instead of using it as an anonymous PM for your criticism?

EDIT: MASSIVE grammar fail in the title, it should be 'conventions'.

No, you can -rep someone however you want for anything you want. It doesn't even need to have anything to do with their post. Today I -repped Dimitri because I didn't like what he did in GTA IV.

I agree, I got negative rep for nothing myself. I guess because I said neither to an poll. But, why does it matter to you?

the rep system is only made for if you gave an useful answer or helped someone is the way to say "thankyou" , you get neg rep when you say something wrong or give wrong info or advice to someone , however if the rep system is bothering you or you dont like it you can display it, if you got any neg reps and you think they are unfair you can pm an admin and they will check

Well it doesn't matter. I am slightly annoyed but I do not think that I need to pm a admin because I got negative rep for something.

Well thank you for the insightful, positive criticism that you provided when you negative repped me...I feel I did deserve negative rep for:

Addressing user as "deary"

I will make sure to not use anymore horrid language when I am addressing someone.

Have a wonderful day.

If you get rep you don't like, PM an admin. I got neg repped for stupid things but I don't pay much attention to it. I think the system's fine and agree with BreakEven. They explained it very well (:

Good jesus I could rant on rep  It's a load of bullshit, don't think too much about it. A month or so ago I was -repped four or five times because

1) I asked a "Stupid" question
2) I'm a smartass and I offended someone

I was too butthurt to show my username on VT for a while. A lot of times it's just people thinking they can change the way we think or the way we talk because they can take away little green squares on our profile

I think I kind of spammed there, but I have to agree with everyone else, however, if someone has -repped you unfairly, I suggest just ignoring it. And if you are thinking about -repping someone for no reason, I highly suggest you don't. It's hurtful and rude, and such action would probably hurt their feelings ~holli

My issue is that it's entirely anonymous if the -repper wants it that way. You can't adress them, you haven't had a chance to respond to their criticisms, and they've -repped you.

Again, it's stupid. I've recieved -rep from people, and they could be one of the hundreds or thousands of people who use this forum. I will never know who it was.

EVERYONE. This is not a thread to bitch about your negreps, if you have a problem PM Mike (ImCoolBeans) or Ronnie (Scarface) and they can take it from there. Seriously guys, let's act a bit more mature.

To the OP: You can often -rep or +rep for anything really, as long as the comment is appropriate.

I agree that the aspect of users -repping you and not even leaving a name is annoying. However think about it, see if the names were shown. It wouldn't be rep conversations it would be rep arguments and revenge repping and the only reason for it would be "you do it to me"...."I do it to you back".

I like leaving my name on neg reps because a user can contact me if they have a problem with what I have said and in the past I have had some good conversations with other people about both my positive and negative reps.

Point is, the rep system isn't a flawless system, but lets face it. What system is flawless?

I learned a longtime ago that complaining about neg reps is pointless. Report them to ImCoolBeans or Scarface and they can look at your neg reps and review them to see if they were justified. However simply saying "the rep is unfair"

This was a quote from a PM CaptainObvious sent me in a reply when I tried to get a neg rep appealed when it was "unfair"

first, we don't reverse reps because they are "unfair" - that is a matter of personal opinion, which is the whole point of rep in the first place. we only reverse them if they are outright abusive.

I don't how much true that statement holds today. However you have to agree simply saying rep is unfair is a matter of opinion.

Overall its is a system that is used to give people feedback on posts and content. However it is wildy abused by a lot of members. However, you have to take it on the chin and just accept it. You can disable reputation in the UCP if you wish too.

Well, I get your point, but for a lot of people, including me, this is the first time they've ever seen an open conversation on unfair rep. Even though it may seem whiney and annoying to the older posters who have gotten over rep, having it deducted unfairly is a pretty big deal to newer members. As long as it's not spamming, and is helping the OP in some way, if not just letting them know that other people feel it's unfair, it's pretty mean to march in and call everyone immature. And I think it's terribly ironic that you thought you could tell the previous posters what to do, and not offer the OP any help at all, aside from providing the names of Mods already stated above. Try to be a tiny bit more understanding? ~holli

Holli. I myself am a Moderator and I know first hand how annoying it is to be unfairly negrepped. I stated in my reply that I understand how it is and I encourage you to report it to an admin. What I was trying to say is that you shouldn't post in this thread itself about negreps, and you should keep it between you and the admins.

For example:

All of these things are complaining about rep. My post was trying to tell you that INSTEAD of complaining you can just report it to an admin and take it from there. I was trying to stop people from posting on this thread with the reasons that they were negrepped.

And I think it's terribly ironic that you thought you could tell the previous posters what to do, and not offer the OP any help at all

Did you skip over this part of my original post?

To the OP: You can often -rep or +rep for anything really, as long as the comment is appropriate.

That part was specifically for the OP, by the way.

Speaking of which, you negrepped me once because I was explaining the difference between a System Restore vs. reinstalling Windows and you didn't read my explanation carefully. Now I'm complaining!

Honestly, I don't consider people sharing experiences pretaining to the OP's post in a helpful way complaining. Really, the OP is pretty new, and hasn't been around long enough to figure out rep, and realise it's really not a big deal. I personally think if someone just posted about a specfic time when they where -repped for no reason, but didn't use their experience to help the OP in any way, then that would be complaining. And I am indeed aware that you are a mod :D Thank you for taking time to post, and although I don't agree with how you worded your responce, I respect your opinion. ~holli

Your respect doesn't go unnoticed :D

I don't know if I've been clear because I'm having trouble wording what I want to say.

I don't want people posting HERE about their negrep experiences. I feel it doesn't pertain to the OP.

HOWEVER, I fully encourage you to PM an admin about it :)

Hope that cleared some things up

Let's not bring up our own personal neg rep complaints in here - this is not the appropriate place to do so and that isn't even what the original post was intended for. If you have a complaint about rep you can either send me or Scarface a PM and we'll take care of it. All you're doing by bringing it up in public is creating resentment, which is unnecessary. In the future please refrain from doing so and instead, as I said, PM an administrator (myself or Scarface).

I was happy to let this thread fade into obscurity, however I have two issues.

One. I can't PM. Sooooo.....yeah.

Two. -repping because you disagree with someones sourced opinion? -repping for no reason? Well, the reason was -_-. I don't think that's appropriate in a forum about discussion.

You can PM staff members no matter how many posts you have. :)

Well first of all.

You have to make 100 posts to Private Message.

Second if you feel you have received unfair rep then you can PM ImCoolBeans or Scarface and then they will get back to you with a verdict.

OK. I can be incredibly stupid sometimes. I had a look around the PM page before, and couldn't find a way to make a new PM, so I assumed I couldn't. Of course, I had a look just then and saw the Send New Message under Private Message.

Stoopid.
