View Full Version : Notification when quoted
Magical

I believe that people should be able to recieve a notification if they're quoted, as it enables people to easily find if they're responded to in a thread.

That's a good idea, but it could be annoying. So it should be optional. But I think people usually have a look in the threads they wrote in so it's not that necessary.

I can vaugly remember this being asked before, nothing was done about it.
If you want to find when people have quoted you or if someone has replied to a thread you have posted in you could subscribe to that thread or click search on the bar above, advanced search, in 'keywords' type your username, change the drop down below to 'search entire posts and this should give you every thread in which your username has come up and it's highlighted in yellow.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Edit: Here's the same thread (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=142789) posted not more than 2 months ago.

Oh, I didn't think of it. It's from another forum.

It's been shot down several times already, but I still think it would be useful...here's the vB mod: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=258001

Would be a good - you could do away with a lot of subscribed thread spam and optionally have a quote notification. Also if someone quotes you but into another thread that would be good to know, as it probably would mean you'd be interested in being involved in that discussion too.
Can see some scope for abuse, but I'd have thought it would be easy enough to police compared to other shenanigans.

It hasn't been just "shot down" for no good reason. Every mod for this idea is ridden with bugs, including that one. If only a few of many are reporting that the mod works well I don't think it's really a good idea to give it the green light. I've read the entire thread for that mod and almost every poster in it brought up an issue the mod has and mostly all of them were left unfixed. People who used the mod said that it works sometimes, while other times it doesn't. I don't think adding a buggy modification that only works when it wants to is really so useful... It sounds to be more of a headache for everybody. I'm also a bit wary of mods that have been worked on by multiple, random people, especially when it still has reported bugs in the end.
I've spent a lot of time looking on that site for a good mod for quote notifications and haven't found one yet. I've looked through countless posts and threads hoping to find one that looks somewhat promising - this one being the best looking of them all and still giving me a bad taste in my mouth. I really don't feel comfortable with the idea of using this modification, that thread is ridden with complaints and bugs from start to finish.
I am totally for this suggestion, it's a matter of it being possible to do.

Good point. And you're right, it seems to be the only mod that does such a thing. So far.

I've found one or two others (and one for VB 3.7 that could probably be tweaked by the right person) but they are all just total messes and have a million more bugs than that one. I really wish there was a good one out there because I agree that this would be a nice addition. I've been looking for a few months, one may pop up some time but it's becoming less likely as time goes on. Apparently there used to be a lot more good mods but a lot of them got pulled - people also started pulling them from there (free download) so that they could get paid for them. Greedy, eh? I'll keep looking, you're also free to share if you find a promising one too.

Seems like you found something. I see there's a new feature, tagging users, so I'm assuming you just added it
EDIT: Never mind, it disappeared...

So did you get a notification for this? :P
This is a testing phase, nothing is set in stone, but it appears to be working well right now. If all continues to go well then we're good to go.

A change that promotes us to become lazy and not have to manually check if anyone responded to us. :P

That's some pretty impressive customer service for a volunteer run board. Nice one (for trying, even if it doesn't turn out to work).
(yeah yeah being a suckup, I know, but it had to be said)

More like because we can't memorize ever single topic we've posted to so we can check.

I always just went under my profile and checked where I posted recently since I'm not always quoted.
I like this feature though (: I saw a little number 1, had no idea what it was, checked it out, and I like it!

...Is there a way to disable it though, for those people who don't necessarily like being notified that someone quoted them? :P

Checked "Edit Options". Don't think there's a way to disable it. I would just ignore it, maybe?

Well how about this...look to the left of each thread. You will see a small envelope. If there is a black dot on the envelope that means you posted in that thread....there deary, problem solved.

Attitude central over here, all of the time. Let's all just be nice to each other, eh? Passive aggressive remarks are silly!

That was a Suite Life of Zack and Cody reference. Zack comes up with one of his impractical solutions and says "Problem solved."
