View Full Version : Still can't drive (18+)

I have no interest in learning how to drive. I just don't want to. Main reason is that I'm scared of the driving itself. Also I'm pretty sure I cannot memorize how to get from here to there. Oh, and I have bad eyesight...
So I'm in no hurry to learn. My brother's 19 and he still can't drive either. Anyone else like me, who's 18 or older, and still don't have a license? I could care less. I'm probably gonna have to learn eventually but since I'm in college right now I don't need to.
EDIT: Oh, and did I mention the actual CAR? I have two cars, they both are my parents'. I don't even me or my brother will be able to officially have one for our own because both my parents need BOTH cars and I don't think we can afford a third one (where would we park it anyways)? But I guess I'm way off from owning my own car (I have to buy my own), so never mind.

my brother didn't have his license for a very very long time. he might have been 18 when he got his license.
why don't you get glasses?

I have glasses. I only wear them when I need to see something on a board or something far away. I don't feel comfortable wearing them 24/7 like the rest of my family. But I guess I'll be wearing it when I drive....still, my mom points out that problem all the time.

I'm 18 and I still don't have it yet, I have no interest but my parents are making me, so I'm driving lessons, etc.

I'm only 17, but I also have no interest in driving, mostly because it scares me.

I don't plan on getting my learners permit next month; public transit takes me where I need to go quickly and efficiently. (And it's cheap!)
...Well, VTA does a decent job.
When it comes time to get a license, I'd get it for when I'll be traveling long-distance (more than 50 miles from my locale/not in service reach of public transport), or when using PT is just not suitable or efficient for the situation (like if I was having a medical emergency, I'd get in my car and drive, not wait for the bus :P)
But yeah... maybe when college rolls around, and when i'm out on my own.

Yeah I think I would rather do public transportation, although I have yet to use any of the buses around my college.

I love to drive, even if you don't have a car, I think it's still pretty important to learn how. There's not much to be scared about. Honestly, when I got my temps, I was absolutely horrible at driving. Thank god my parents would only let me drive the car with lane keep assist lol. At first, my dad just took me to a parking lot and I practiced there for a while before I really got driving. Take it from me, I was horrified at first, but I found it to be very easy and I got the hang of it pretty easily. Sadly I failed my test the first time, not because I'm not a good driver, but I was SUPER nervous, I passed with a perfect score the second time.
Anyways, my advice, give it a try. Practice in a mall parking lot, it's not as hard as it seems. You'll get used to it easily!

Well I have always loved cars and driving, so I got my license two days after my 16th birthday (1 year anniversary tomorrow) and am so glad I did. Even if you don't have a car, being able to drive and drive well is an important life skill. It can be hugely important in emergency situations, but also in social ones, where your friends may be all drunk and you're the only sober person. It really screws things up if you don't have a license then. A few of my friends are 18+ and don't have their licenses, and none of them are really happy with it. Most of them just don't get it because their parents drive them everywhere and they don't think they need it.

I think you guys will have very different opinions on driving once you actually start doing it regularly or when you get your own car. It's not difficult at all and everyone gets it down fairly quickly. I got my license 4 months late because I got sick and had to stay at the hospital for 5 days last year, inconveniently when I had to take my road test to get my actual license. Afterwards it took me a month or so to start feeling like myself again and stop being so fatigued all of the time. When we called (mid-February-ish) to reschedule, the best they could do was April, so I got it then :P

We have GPS for that.

Doesn't that only work on highways and in the center lane? Your driving must be very limited.

I got my learners permit a month after my 15th birthday. I got my license a year later and passed the first time. I've been driving ever since. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I love being able to go where I want to go without relying on anyone else.

eh don't have time right now since I'm in college. Maybe over the summer I'll learn.
I did sorta "drive" at this fun park. It was driving go carts, and it had an accelerator and a brake, and my mom made me go on it because she thought it would be sorta like real driving lol :P
