Many excited Apple customers stood in line for hours Friday to get their hands on the shiny new iPhone 5, only to discover nicks and scratches on the smartphones straight out of the box.
Dissatisfied buyers took to message boards dedicated to Apple products, complaining about slight yet pesky scuffs and scrapes near the antenna markers on the side of the device or close to the screen.
According to posts on sites like MacRumors, it appears that most of the problems are limited to the black version of iPhone 5.

Same, even though I'd never want one...I'd expect mine to be perfect and brand new, coming out of the box...

I wouldnt care. Send it back (and apple does overnight shipping btw) and in a day you will have a new phone. Not a big deal

But would they even replace it? These scratches are pretty tiny.
You don't think overnight shipping really means overnight, do you? Overnight is only if you get it to the courier before a certain time and the planets align. In reality it probably takes an extra day to get there, an extra day for the new phone to get to you, and who know how many days in between for processing? If I just got my iPhone 5, I wouldn't bother emailing Apple, printing a shipping label, dropping it off at the courier, and then waiting possibly a week for the replacement for some scratches that are hardly noticeable.
Besides, if I preordered my iPhone 5 to get it the first day possible I'm probably someone who gets iPhones the day they come out even though my previous iPhone works fine, so I'm only 12-18 months away from my next iPhone. I can tough it out.

iPhone, pre-scratched. Sounds innovative. Next it will be pre-shattered.

I know its been awile and i appologize for that. Apple does over night shipping. I had an issue with my ipad. I sent it to apple tuesday afternoon, they recieved it wensday, sent out a new one and i had it the morning of thursday. And if it came scratched they would indeed replace it for no cost. Also you dont have to pay for the shipping. And BTW. You bring the ipad to a ups store, tell them your shipping code, and they have a box and shipping label ready. Why would you wait a whole week to have it replaced? I really think you are over thinking this.

It still wouldn't matter, because I wouldn't bother getting it replaced for some scratches that you need a magnifying glass to see. Overnight shipping doesn't mean anything when it'll probably be delivered when I'm at school and I'll get a white slip stuck to my door telling me to pick it up at their warehouse.

Well you have the option to pick it up at the UPS store instead of your doorstep.

As minor as those issues are, I'd be pretty pissed too. Because if I pay $400+ for a phone. It should be perfect.

Anything I'm buying, I expect to be in a good condition out of the box. Wonder what happened.

This is exactly what I'd be thinking.
Mind you, are you really surprised at this?
People pay way too much attention these days.

I admit I'd be mad if I just dropped $500 dollars on a phone only for it to be damaged, but I couldn't help laughing at this.
