ok so its time for diet and nutrition lesson 101:
starving yourself, fasting, throwing up your food doesn't make you skinny
your body goes into hungry mode and you start preserving extra fat
so when you realize you have to actually eat normally you will get extra fat
you need to eat a healthy diet not starve yourself for fucks sake
thanks you and please be patient as i am still learning english.

well dieting means restraining from eating certain foods, in this case all foods,
so it is kind of like extreme ocd of dieting if you understand. for people obesess get skinny obsess takes over their life.

i appreciate the thought you put into this thread but eating disorders are not really what you see in the mirror; it's what you think you see.

ok then i think the media should really enforce the idea that extremely super bony skinny girls are not attractive, as most eating disorder sufferes are female.

You think that it's all about being thin? It really isn't. It's other anxieties, issues, worries and self-hatred being channeled into starving or purging.

Those who use it as a "diet" are generally the pro-anas, who (for the most part) don't actually have an eating disorder and in fact romanticize the entire thing. Yuck.

It's not a diet >.< It's a sickness. Please, I know it's a common misconception but there is more to an eating disorder than an overgrown, OCD diet.

Again, eating disorders are not diets. They aren't about being beautiful. If that were the case, the sufferers would recognize that having your hair fall out or your teeth rot from stomach acid is not getting them where they want to go, and just stop. It's more like, you hate yourself so much you want to disappear. And the thinner you get, the closer you are to disappearing. It's nothing to do with being attractive.
Thank you for the sentiment, but it's just not that simple I'm afraid.

Even though I know you didn't mean it to be, this is rather ignorant. It's an illness that keeps you up all night staring at yourself in the mirror hating everything you see in your reflection. I agree with Evil Angel. I'm afraid too.

Oh dear, rant time.
Firstly, the gesture is appreciated but I think there are a few things you need to know. Firstly, we know the damage it does to us, we're fully aware, in fact I'm pretty sure we know just as much if not more than other people, because we are experiencing it first hand.
Secondly, we don't care. It's considered a psychological, not a physical problem for a reason. There is a line, and once you cross it the disorder starts to control rather than you control it. It's not called a diet, because it's not about being skinny or attractive. It's about self control, and power I guess. At least it is for me, I use it as a coping mechanism.
Thirdly, what you are saying about the body retaining water and fat is true, however the basic science still stands - eat less, lose more body mass. And we all know this, so even if the body is retaining it will eventually lose.
After a while it can even become just habitual. As a bulimic, I have got to the point where I will purge just because that's what I always do, not because I need to or feel triggered, and I don't even want to lose weight or have that constant need for self control. It's just how I deal with things. It's very correlated with my mental health and wellbeing, and often when I'm in that mindset I don't really care what happens to me.
I know this won't count for every anorexic/bulimic out there, but this is just my opinions and thoughts on the matter. I hope it helps you understand eating disorders a little more. If we could change it, I'm sure quite a few of us would, but it's not that simple. That's why thousands of people with eating disorders are institutionalised into health clinics and eating recovery hospitals every year, it's a very personal battle and very hard to break alone.

I'd like to believe that you didn't mean to put it that way since you're still learning English and all, but it irks me to hear somebody "scolding" people with eating disorders. We've had enough of that from our families, friends, and shrinks. It's a daily battle against ourselves, too. We also know that purging or fasting is unhealthy. You don't have to say that, "for fucks sake" (excuse the language, I'm obviously only quoting). I wish you gave your advice on Anas and Mias in a less commanding manner.

As everyone else is saying, eating disorders are just that... disorders. It's like telling somebody diagnosed with depression, "just stop being sad, it doesn't help anything." Or telling somebody with bipolar, "stop having mood swings, it's stupid."
Eating disorders deal with much deeper issues than wanting to be thin. Rarely, if ever, do eating disorders appear from JUST seeing thin people on the television. It's an obsessive compulsive disorder. Other than wanting to lose weight, it deals with focusing on the number of calories / on the scale, seeing your bones, purifying yourself. The feeling of being empty. It's something done for YOURSELF, not other people. Some people struggling with these disorders even know it's bad for themselves, but it takes over their life. It's an addiction.
So, I appreciate you wanting to help with this thread. I know you didn't mean any harm by it, but this can be triggering. It's difficult being told "just don't do this" or "just don't do that." It isn't that easy.

This isn't helpful to anyone really.
If you have specific questions feel free to make another thread but I don't think this one will go anywhere good. :locked:
