I like the way they performed it, but I still prefer Johnny Cash.

I'm so done with this song.
At least Closer through hype still has its value. I don't even like listening to The Downward Spiral because I'm so sick of overpopularized songs.

But if we're talking about the two versions, man, this really gets me annoyed. I don't know if I'm alone with this opinion, but the cover can NEVER be better than the original. Hear me? Never. I always prefer the original. I don't like Nirvana, Tori Amos did an amazing cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit that I actually listen to. I still support Nirvana. Johnny Cash's version is great, but he gets way too much credit and especially in this case, many people actually think it's his song.

Amanda Palmer's cover! Let's mention that fucker. Come on now.

I love how some people think Johnny Cash wrote it. In any case, it's a great NIN song. Yes, it's over-popularized, but that's music for you. NIN will always do it better. Hands down.

I think Johnny Cash's cover is way better than the original. I heard the NIN version first and didn't like it at all, but when I heard Cash's, especially watching it with the video, it brought tears to my eyes, it seemed more emotional to me. I know he didn't write it, but to me it sounds like he did and like NIN would be the cover.

See, I don't get why the Cash version is the more emotional one. There's this utter passion that Trent brings to all his songs, Hurt is a very powerful song if overrated. Cash has a pretty version. Trent of course makes it a NIN song and that should say enough.

Exactly! Trent claims this song, to him, is the most emotional song he's written. Saying that Cash's version is more emotional would be absurd. I can understand someone liking the sound of Cash's more, but you cannot say his is more passionate, emotional, moving, tear-jerking, and awe-inspiring than Reznor.

I like how everyone doesn't even consider Trent's opinion of Cash's cover. During an interview after the release of "With Teeth", Reznor said he was humbled that Cash covered the song, but he was torn because of how personal the lyrics were to him.

That video is a great example of the emotion, but for me, I find Cash's version more emotional as it's coming from a fragile, old man almost on his deathbed.

NIN's version is by far my favorite. Cash's version is great too though, but I think NIN's is just way darker.

I feel like Johnny Cash's cover of the song just feels more genuine. But either way, It's a great song.

Big fan of both versions of the song, the original, and Sir Johnny's cover. Johnny Cash's rendition does more for me if I am honest. And I love the story behind him covering the song.

How is it more genuine? Because he was on his death bed when he decided to cover it?

I like both of them. Unfortunately, I was one of those people that thought Johnny Cash wrote the song...needless to say I was blown away by the original. I think Johnny Cash put his own twist on the song, so they're both awesome for different reasons. They're both very emotional, but in different ways.
