So this is not like the other thread. Because that thread is what would you do to change your current country. This thread, is asking what you would do if you owned your own country.
Addressing things like, main language spoken, government, population, laws, food, etc. I'm hoping this thread will catch a lot of attention and will have a lot of posts added to it haha :D
Ok, to start off and set the scene. I will start the beginning of how you found it and such.
The beginning:
The year is 2015. You are on a ship, and are sailing to no where. Unexpectedly, you come across a large island, you discover the island is roughly 3,000,000 sq. miles (Slightly bigger than the size of Australia). You go back to your home country, and purchase it (asking permission of other countries, tons of paperwork, etc)You are now the owner of your own country, the word catches wind, and many from other countries hear of this new country of yours. Your country Does not have unlimited funds. Many other countries want to help out, and give a free donation of a total of 3 trillion dollars... Now you fill in the rest, type of government, marriage laws, law and ethics, maine religion (doesn't mean you enforce it, but like how main religion of Italy is catholic, or main religion of the south of the US is Christian etc), national animal/food, military/police, politicians, Education, and strengths and weaknesses (for every 3 strengths you have, you must have 1 weakness), type of weather, type of cities/buildings (a farm type country, Eco friendly, bustling city, mountainous, etc)
Really anything you'd want, preferably a bit descriptive not just "A free country of religion speech etc".

17 elected officials to vote on certain stuff. Catholicism, though I wouldn't enforce it. National animal is a dog, and the national food, pizza. I wouldn't have a big military/police, then it would be corrupt. Actually, one force per 100k square miles. Somewhat impossible, but can be done, I don't think it would have politicians because then it would get very corrupt. The education would be similar to the public system like the US, but more money focused on it. Strengths would be good debaters, and rich in oil, the weakness' would be manufacturing. A diverse climate and terrain like Maryland. Again, it would be farmland, have cities, be mountainous, but none of that eco whatyamacallut. Another thing, the main sport would be stock car racing similar to NASCAR, and also an open wheel series like Indy IZOD or Whelen Modified.
EDIT: When I say no politicians, I mean anyone deemed fit to run can run, and that would be done on an online poll with a password that would take a government supercomputer years to crack.

Government: A republic that functions the same way the united states does, but with a forth branch of government. This branch is basically like a small group of elders. Before anything can happen it must pass through these guys. It will most likely be made up of elected officials in the beginning, but as time passes it will be made up of past leaders.
Marriage Laws: One part of our culture is that a piece of paper that says we love each other "THIS MUCH" is unneeded. It will mostly be done only for legal purposes, and if two people of the same sex would like to be married, who am I to stand in there way.
Law/Ethics: The justice department will be much like the US's, but it will slowly adapt over time, to be much, much better.
Religion: Agnosticism will be the main religion. If there isn't already a bible like book for agnostics, one will be developed and taught in schools. It will teach tolerance, moderation, and critical thinking.
National Animal: Elephant, because they never forget and they mourn when a loved one dies. This is an obvious display of intelligence.
Military/Police: We will have a professional military. This military will be very exclusive and only the best of the best will be accepted as a part of it. We will of course have a specialized group that goes to other countries, but for the most part our soldiers will stay within the country. They will patrol the border and others will enforce laws. When they are around civilians they must be courteous, and they are not allowed to violate their rights.
Politicians: Do to the tolerance taught in schools I would hope that the country wouldn't be divided into parties, and if it is I would hope they wouldn't let their own interests interfere with the common good.
Education: Public education will be taken very seriously. It will get a high amount of funding and if the teachers are not doing quality work they will be fired, at a very low tolerance rate. Private schools will be allowed, but the public schools will push to surpass them. A voucher program of sorts will be developed if a parent would like to put their child through private schooling.
Weather: Indiana weather.
Type of cities: Underground cities cause we're awesome.
This country will be very scientific. Loads of funding will go towards scientific research. Regulations on said research will be VERY limited. Unless it endangers the country, violates a UN regulation, or violates the rights of a human being (this definition will be very black and white, not gray in any way shape or form) it will be allowed. Think about it, through scientifc research we can develope plants that grow 3x bigger than they are supposed to and then harvest them with relative ease. Nano technology will allow for major break throughs in medicine, computers, and many other fields. When the earth becomes over populated terrafomring will be necisary for inhabiting other celestial bodies. If we could destroy stars and harvest every ounce of their potential energy in return, we would almost never have to worry about attaining energy. With science, the possibilites are endless.
In evolution, the best way for a species to advance is to be faced with competition. If you see a problem with anything in this post please enlighten me so that I can think of a clever solution.
