I know this is kind of personal for some of you guys but why do cut or harm your self. I had this one friend and she used to cut her self and I could never understand why she did it. Does it help you forget drama in your life or escape I really am curious to understand why people do it.

I fear pain, so I inflict different pain to escape it.
Sometimes you just need to bleed to know you're still alive.

Oh but wouldn't it make more sense to find some other way the realise the pain than hurting yourself

But it's hard to stop; an addiction. Once people do it once they need to do it again to get that same feeling. Eventually they become dependant on it. Slightly Akin to a cocaine or heroin addiction. It's tragic, really. The road to recovery cannot be started without motivation to stop from the victim. If the victim doesn't wanna stop, they won't stop; they need love and support and friendship.

I've never really understood it either, and I've done it before. The feeling was just like letting the pain and worry just flow away with the blood. It was almost like relief. It helped me just think and sort out everything.

I cut for a release. I have never been able to express myself by talking, though I can sometimes with writing and I often cry myself to sleep. When things were the worst I cut for release and watching blood trickle down my skin and pain radiate through me was like a release of tension of the days pains and stress. After a while It just became an addiction; like a drug.

You only do it when you feel completely valueless; cutting is an option at that point.

@ lou lou and fman what if you break your skin and get an infection or something serious how do you get it fixed without telling people about what you do?

For some people, including me, it comes from a self hatred of yourself, of your body, so it doesn't really take 'courage'. Just enough self hate and the need to inflict pain upon yourself.

Okay personally I don't think someone who hasn't self harmed can ever really understand it. You can try to maybe you'll be able to relate somewhat but don't expect to truly understand because you won't and in that you're lucky. I think its underestimated how much pain you have to be in to harm yourself even just once let alone repetitively weekly or daily. To somehow be desperate enough to go to that length because somewhere something is telling you you'll feel better if you do. For a while it works you get this release, this rush of endorphins and you're okay for a few minutes. You tell yourself this is just temporary you don't need it, you won't do it again. But then you do it again and before you know it you're addicted you need this and you just can't stop but its making everything worse keeping secrets and lies.
I do think self harm is an addiction, you're in pain you do it a few times and before you know it you're trapped in this cycle. Like any addiction there's a physical and mental part to it.
