FORT LEE, N.J. (WABC) -- A teen aboard a double decker party bus stuck his head out a hatch and struck it on an overpass on I-95 in Fort Lee and died.

The hatch on the top of the bus was open and struck the Fletcher Avenue overpass at around 6:45 p.m. on Friday.

He was killed while riding in a party bus.

It was a night destined for celebration, but it ended in tragedy.

Police say 16-year-old Daniel Fernandez stuck his head out of an emergency hatch on the double decker party bus he was riding in, hitting his head on the Fletcher Avenue overpass.

Police say the bus was carrying 65 teens headed to a sweet 16 party in New Jersey.

The bus picked up the teens from Queens and was just coming off the George Washington Bridge and heading onto the southbound lanes of the NJ Turnpike when the accident happened.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at Hackensack Medical Center.

At the Port Authority Police Station, anxious parents reunited with their children.

Most were visibly shaken and upset, brushing past the media.

No other teens on the bus were hurt, but sources say they all suffered severe emotional trauma from what they witnessed.

The bus was operated by Designer Limousine out of Long Island.

Eyewitness News has been unable to reach them for comment.

The bus involved was the Double Decker Mega Liner which they claim is the largest double decker party bus in the country.

It seats up to 70, has 2 floors with a first level dance floor, a VIP room, a touch screen juice box and 15 flat screen tv's.

There was also a chaperone aboard the bus at the time of the accident but it's not yet known where that chaperone was or what they were doing.

Tragic story, but I wonder what would have possessed him to do what the teen did anyway.

The will to have fun? Being a teenager? Who knows?

Very sad either way.

Good god. What a gory mess that would've been o.e I feel so bad for all the the teenagers present, as well as the sixteen year old hosting the party. Maybe that's why emergency hatches are for emergencies only. ~holli

I hate seeing stories like this. A sixteen year old who's life was ended so quickly. I wouldn't say it was his fault, because it is a party and he was just having some fun, but shit man. He wouldve had whole life ahead of him. :'(

Oh the things teens do... I can't even imagine how shook up the people in that bus would be, seeing that happen. *shudders* Or the family...

Sad, but that's the price of stupid decisions sometimes.
Common sense should tell him that buses = much taller than cars, so the chance of hitting something would be much higher.

..Does it not occur to you to look out the window before you stick your head out? I mean, damn, kid. Yeah, I feel bad for him, but that's just plain stupid.

That is beyond stupidity. That is actually pretty close to where I live, about a 15 minute drive; but this was all over the news/news paper when it first happened.

You can't cure stupid. Call me cruel. But that is what you get for doing something as dangerous as that. Hence it's called an "emergency hatch" for the use of emergencies only. Not to poke around at for fun simply because your bored.

I pity the friends and family who need to cope with the loss, much more than the boy whose life ended. Maybe I'm cruel and insensitive, but that behavior was just plain dumb. Notwithstanding... RIP. I'm sure he will be missed.

Sigh, another story of a silly teen doing obviously silly things... Call me harsh or cruel but that is just plain dumb. I feel sorry for the kids on the bus and his family though. I couldn't imagine...
