View Full Version : AD Revenue

I read somewhere on here that the website is funded from out of pocket money. I'm sure this has been thought of, but why not try gaining some cash through ad revenue? What are thoughts on this? I'm sure it could be beneficial for the website. I'm not sure how much you could make though. There are different types of revenue gain through advertisements, and I'm not sure if the traffic is great enough for it.
What I think would be good would be the pay-per-view system instead of pay per click. I think the rates based on traffic are too high, I'm not sure. I could go on, but first, what are your views and thoughts on this mods?
A problem could be that ad space seems minimal on this site. Any advertisement banner could be invasive. What do you think?
Sorry for any typos/grammar mistakes. I am on my cellular mobile communications device.

That was done in the past, and it was taken away again soon after because you can probably imagine the types of ads that appeared in P101 ;)
Plus, it's annoying. This is a help site, not an out-there-to-make-a-quick-buck site. And there are some willing individuals who donate to this site, who fund this site's operation.
I don't like ads on here.

Oh so it was done before? Yeah and that's what I was thinking, about how irritating they probably are on this site because of how small space there is to offer. And ohhh that must have been bad in p101, but I thought you had control of the type of ads that could appear?
I just thought of the idea to help support the developers. Its a great site and its awesome of them to be generous enough to support the site full-time off of their money and any donations sent in. GOOD ON YOU DEVELOPERS.
thanks for answering!

I tried it before and it put a bunch of links to adult chat rooms and had really tacky headlines. I probably could have gotten it to work with filtering over time but either way whatever money I did made I would have to pay taxes on it. That would be another form to file and likely I'd end up oweing taxes at the end of the year.

If there was a donate button in the FAQ page or something, I wouldn't mind coughing up.

You see the problem is with that. Is you get people who would say donate $10 then they think they would own the place. Or when they say got banned from the site they would be like "but I payed money", "I shouldn't be banned from this site","this is totally unfair". I think we had a thread a few months back or something like that about donating and the exact thing was covered and said.
Also GovTeen has ads up, I think if you have under 25 posts you get ads and they are annoying. I logged on a few weeks ago and was hit with a site to buy Russian brides.
I don't like ads and I think the Majority of VT would not like them as well

Donating money can also get a little dodgy with kids and underaged people. Some parents might not be so keen on it and want a refund if it was done without asking, things like that, etc... It sounds like a mess to me.

I agree, ads are a nightmare; they bombard you with all sorts of things you just simply don't need or want and I have never in my life seen an ad that interests me, nor have I clicked one. I think perhaps a page designed specifically for ads may be a better idea, or putting a FEW on the homepage of the site.

Or, no ads at all? Why fix something that isn't broken?

VT will not have ads on it. Due to the some of the site's content we would draw some pretty inappropriate/racy ads. We don't need any of that :P
