So my school's counseler person was in the library yesterday so I asked her if someone could talk to her about personal stuff. She said that thats not what a counseler is for and that shes only there to make schedules and help with grades. And I was planning on getting help with my cutting, as I sure as hell can't quit by myself. So, if I may ask, is it true that they aren't there to help with problems or issues outside of school?

no, it's not true. as far as I know, the counselors at my school do and can help with issues outside of school, like family issues, for example. I'm sure it's like that at most other schools. I'm pretty sure it's what they're supposed to do, not just school stuff

No, it's not always like that... There are 3 counselors at my school, one for the freshmen, one for sophomore, and one for juniors and seniors. The first two were never interested in personal shit, only school related stuff. However, my current counselor is different, he definitely cares about the students and has even helped me through a few problems and makes point of getting to know the students on a more personal level, because that's his job, to guide us, as he says "not only in school, but in life."

Technically, school counselors only need to talk about personal issues if they are affecting school performance (e.g. anorexia resulting in zero homework being done,) so while she should be looking after you, it isn't strictly speaking her job. I'm sorry.

Counselors, at least at my school, are not expected to care. They are there to manage schedules and grades and are not qualified to deal with mental or personal issues like a college counselor would. At least that's what my ex-college teacher told us.
