Depending on your skin, a sunburn can often peel and turn into a tan yes.
I would reccomend rubbing an aloe vera based gel into the burn twice a day to help deal with the pain and to help heal the skin.
I'm afraid I can't help more than that as my skin doesn't burn

....Also keep yourself fully hydrated until the redness has completely faded.
If you have naturally tan skin, it should become a darker tan. If your skin is naturally fair, you may peel and lose your tanned layer of skin.

I get sunburned pretty easily. I try not to look in the mirror when it happens.

I have really fair skin, so I typically burn really bad. I use aloe vera gel for the first few day, then once it hurts less I put a ton of lotion on to keep it from peeling so I can keep the tan. Other wise, if I do peel, I still stay pretty tan, but not as dark.

Tsk tsk... sun damage is bad for you... :P
Hydration is the key here! Drink a ton of water, and like everyone else said, use some aloe vera. It would help if you can get the clear stuff instead of the green stuff because the artificial colorings in the green stuff can irritate your burnt skin further. Whether or not it will turn into a tan, really depends on your skin. Try not to wear tight clothing and stay in a cool environment if you can.

Careful about what brand of aloe vera and related lotions... Extreme overuse can cause strain on the skin and related organs... alone isn't toxic but combined with sunburn... You could have a risk for cancer! Nobody wants that now, right!

Definately moisturise, it can save your skin peeling and save your tan.
I've seen a couple of people specifically mention aloe vera and I'm going to say NO to the aloe. I found the hard way I am allergic to it (ended up looking like I had black eyes when I used aloe face wash), and its the only thing that I ever reacted to like that, and thank god it wasn't putting it on burns on that occasion. For what little good it supposedly does (slightly antisceptic iirc) I'd say avoid : its best not to use anything too complicated on burns of any type. You don't need aloe, but what you do need is a moisturiser (olive oil works well if you have nothing in the house otherwise).
Good sun cream shouldn't wash off that much, so get something like Nivea which I find works well being in and out of the pool all the time. If you are from Leeds am I right in thinking you were pale white at the start? If so, then next time use a higher factor, at least to start with. Dont stay in direct sun so long and be aware you can still tan and even burn in the shade of an umbrella if you are really pale. Also, get your kit off more in the uk and get a base tan before you go next time maybe (not tanning booths).
