Is anyone else considered "That hacker guy" around school? I am.
I am pretty knowledgeable on Android and computers in general, and partially on iOS. I do rom and tool development for android. (Google my username :P)

For example just today I had a senior that doesn't even know me (I'm a sophomore) ask me if I'm myself and I said yes, and then he replied with "can you jailbreak my iPhone 4?"....

Being that hacker guy is not that bad, but there's that whole "they think you are the computer messiah and can hack or fix anything" problem.

Just wanted some input from everyone else :P

And sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I'm in the over-hyped Silicon Valley, where all cool gadgets are said to come from.
There are many people at my school that are considered "hacker guys", but half are just script kiddies who found a tutorial online.
Personally, I try to keep a low profile, as I'd get flooded with questions like "You know a lot about XYZ, right?", where "XYZ" is a computer topic. If I say "yes", then the next question is "So, can you fix bla for me?", and it is expected that I'm able to provide the magical fix then and there, or the next thing is "So you don't know about XYZ after all".

And besides, my hobby lies in the things people don't want me to know about :P

Well, I'm not "that hacker," but I used to be pretty close to the school's "hacker girl."

No. Unless forced, I don't make my computer-related skills known by peers at school. I wouldn't stop being annoyed. And the tools and applications I already wrote for public use are signed using a nickname I reserve for that purpose exclusively.

Very few people at school know I'm decently familiar with computers and programming. For most, I'm just "the guy who doodles and writes silly things". I'm perfectly fine with that, don't plan on changing this anytime soon. Else I'd be flooded by stupid requests shaped over a "Can you XXX on my phone/computer/etc". I've already enough writing requests, so I don't want to add coding/hardware ones to the mix.

They don't call me a 'hacker' per se, I'm just that guy you can ask for computer help.

Even me!

I was friends with the hackers (yes there were two in my year group) They have both left (possibly) anyway I'm ashamed to say they got up to some dodgey stuff...

Heck they even once used a functioning laptop as a frisbee :O

I mentioned I run a site, and now regret it :P
lol, and the Languages I know aren't even that useful offline (PHP,Javascript,HTML,Python,XML,CSS,SQL)

Of course, I feel like hacking is a rather overhyped thing, as if hackers are smarter than developers, some sort of elite.

Jailbreaking is kinda sort of illegal. I don't know if you actually went through with that kids offer, but if you did then, yeah. Apple is fighting to make jailbreaking come with some kind of fine or whatever. But for right now it just voids your warranty and you get a little smack on the hand.
I have a lot of computer knowledge, but i keep that separated from my school. They don't need to know that.

My senior year of high school I was just pretty much that computer girl. People new I was a decent programmer, and teachers liked to have me make sample web pages for them to show in classes, but I never did any hacking.

All though I was the only person who could get into the schools blocked and locked internet and get past the road blocks.

I didn't make it known I was good with IT in general. It just leads to being asked favours ect.
