View Full Version : Would you rather they be on the streets?

Something interesting has come up.
My friend has her baby at 16, strictly religious parents, stuff happens she moves out at 18, stuff falls a part and she's at risk of being homeless. She becomes a stripper. I'm shocked and pretty appalled our mutual friends have turned their backs on her calling her disgusting, low scum, her son didn't deserve to be born, she should be on the streets, they'd never sink so low to strip they've got dignity. I ask would they rather she and her child starve and be out on the streets with no where to go or anything to get them to a better place in life, they said they'd rather rummage through dumpsters for even a teeny tiny crumb than so much as take off their shoes for people or teach their kids to be so desperate.
So here's my question:
What do you guys think? Is it so wrong to resort to professions so strongly frowned upon, and provide what you can from what's made? Would you rather people suffer and struggle than do this?

I feel that it's right what she is doing. She is trying to support her and her child.
I would rather both of them be sheltered in a house that they can live in.
That's low of mutual friends to be saying stuff like that. I don't think they even considered what they would do if they were in her position. I'm not even a girl! lol. But besides the point, I do believe that once she can find a better job, that she will be happier. It's not like she wanted to strip from what I can tell. But the fact of the matter is that she is TRYING to provide for her CHILD.
She is doing the best she can with what she has. And I do believe that she doesn't deserve all of the criticism it's just not okay in my opinion. Sure, we all judge and I may not be the best person all the time, but that's just crude..

I don't think it's wrong, absolutely not. Sure, it may be degrading, but if I had a kid to support, I would go to any lengths to take care of them. It would be one of my last resorts, not the absolute last, but one of them, but I would do it if I had to. I had a friend last year start stripping because her boyfriend left her and their son and her waiting job wasn't enough to pay rent and feed the baby. I see nothing wrong with that.

I don't think it's wrong, but i also don't think it's right.
Her parents should stop being such pricks. (that's the part that's wrong) Seriously, religious parents you say? Well what assholes they are for allowing their own daughter to have to fend for herself like that. Maybe she made a mistake with the baby, but you know what, they are her parents. I'm honestly always appalled when situations like this occur. I'd like to run up to her mother her drop kick her in her teeth.
Anyways. Yeah so your friend. She's doing a good thing trying to support her child. Although it may not be the most conventional means of getting money, she's doing what she has to do for the better. Good for her.

Absolutely right, she's doing the right thing. Do what you need to do to survive.

Alright see that's what confuses me so much about the mutual friends.
Her parents basically have disowned her, she's 18 so there's no legal responsibility to her anymore, and she's saving what she can to try and get into school to get a better life. It's not like she's got the power or skills to just walk into a place and get a job that pays more than what she makes.
I in general dislike the moral crusades people go on, especially when those in question really don't have much of a choice if they want to live.

This reminds me a lot of a song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LahcSFleKm8) I think that she is doing is the lesser of two evils.

Its a matter of perspective we saw this through the pov of your friend whom I feel sorry for
But imagine how like TV portray strippers rite? Tht basiclly the general view point of most ppl. An angry smartass lady whose covered in stds in some crappy club. Since the dawn of man strippers weren't really the most beloved job.
She doesn't love her job
Personally I think she should try to see if her parents accept her back and try college and do something else more profiting

She's only doing what is best for her family. It isn't wrong, nor is it right, but i'm sure it's better than living on the streets. Although, there is something called welfare if she didn't know. Or is she not eligible at her age? I don't really know much about that legal jargin. I think she's doing the right thing, better they have money then have no money and almost die on the streets. It's not a matter of dignity, it's a matter of health, and safety. I wish her good luck.

I think she's using some help. I can't say I really know if she's on some sort assistance or not, but she is aware of it. Her greatest concern is getting into a Welfare trap. She doesn't want to become someone that remains unemployed because it's not worth it when they get more on welfare. Her son doesn't know she's a stripper and she's not going to tell him. She wants him to learn though, that you put your family first and do all you can for them to be secure.
She's not a dirty stripper. She'll never do drugs she loves her child too much and knows first hand what happens to drug doers, and it's illegal here to touch the dancers. It's not a fully nude strip club either, just optional. I don't know what she does about that, it's her business how much she does to get some money.
Her parents are not an option for her. They're convinced she was 'touched by satan in the womb' and want no part of anything that has to do with her.
Truly this was her last resort and since it's secure enough for the little family, it seems to have been a good flip of the coin..

I don't think it's wrong. She is doing what's necessary to care for her child. It's regrettable that she had to become a stripper as a last resort, but she didn't really have other options. Living on the streets and potentially starving isn't an option when she has to care for a child.
Her parents, on the other hand, are completely wrong. They might not be legally obliged to help her, but they should do all they can anyway. To completely abandon her while she has a young child to care for is reprehensible.
