Is hell real? Is hell truly a lake of fire or is it just a concept that Christians came up with to explain the consequences of not following the word of the lord? If it is real, then what sends you to hell?
That leads to my next question: is knowledge evil, or is it the way it's used that is evil???
I ask these things because I have a hard time believing the Bible in general. I find it hard to accept the idea that God would send any of his creations to hell, or condemn them for knowing. Wouldn't he/she/it want people to live up to their full potential and know all they can know? Isn't knowledge beautiful???
And then, if knowing and discovering is fine, then is it fine to explore other faiths and avenues??? Is it okay to learn and indulge theologically? Will I be eternally damned for exploring things like magic and the occult? I don't intend to hex anyone or gain wealth and sex and whatever ..... but I want to explore, just to know, just for fun. Is there only one god? Is there a god and goddess? Is there multiple Gods, Demi gods, deities, ........?????
Wouldn't god want us to KNOW and EXPLORE before we committed to one religion, so we could be fully devoted?
Is doubt going to do me any harm???
*Raised Roman Catholic; chose not to complete catechism and be confirmed because I wasn't devoted or sure. Have been exploring other religions and faiths, including paganism. I have morals and everything, but I don't want to just blindly follow some religion because it's what I've been told to do. < Jesus didn't, and look how things turned out for him :P . Just saying ....>
*No rants please. Just honest ideas and opinions. It doesn't matter what your religion is, I won't judge.

There is not a thred of evidence to support the claim that hell is real, Christianity does have some science behind it but overall it's a faith. Knowledge is beautiful. But people can use knowledge to harm people. According to the bible, the biggest sin that can be committed, is not accepting Christ into your heart. That is the only way you can go to heaven, is accepting Christ. In return of accepting him, you should live your life according to the bible and the church. All Christianity is, is a faith. There is evidence, that a Jesus did survive. But only on faith, can you believe he was the son of God. Religion simply means the belief and worship of a superhuman Controlling power. The bible doesn't necessarily want you to go to another belief. But it does however, want you to make your belief in the Christian God, stronger. There is evidence that supports christianity and there is evidence that disproves Christianity, it matters where you look. If your looking to disprove it, I can assure you there is evidence for that. If you want to approve Christianity and validate it, there is evidence for that to. It's just about looking in the right places.

There is no proof that there IS a god out there, or heaven/hell. There is no real proof. But, honestly, I don't believe almost anything you read in the bible. I am not going to spent my life worshiping or praying on something. You are your own "god", you control most of your life and your own take decisions and it's your life. I think that it is most important to remember that you dont NEED anyone but YOU, obviously there is comfort in friends or people around you.
As a fan of the occult myself I spent nights researching about it or black magic and such. Just because you like to research on a typical subject that doesn't mean you support it.

There is no evidence to support the vast majority of the claims made by Christianity. The bible isn't really proven, and some parts of it are demonstrably false. There is no evidence ot heaven or hell either.
Christianity requires you to accept its claims based on faith. Faith is basically believing in something due to reasons other than evidence. Whether you believe depends on whether you think faith is a valid way of knowing.
Personally, I don't think there is a god. I don't really understand why someone would believe something without evidence, but I was raised without religion, and I might think differently if I had been raised with one. I don't mind letting people have their own beliefs, unless they use faith to make false claims or support discrimination.

First yes it is real! Same as Heaven is real too! In the bible it describes Hell as a fiery furnace for those who don't believe or lived their life wrongly.
Well you got to really understand and really read the bible to understand why God is putting some of his creations in Hell. He is giving us a choice! It's to accept him and live the good path, or it's not to accept him and life the bad path. If you do choose the bad path because of temptation or whatever, of course you will go to Hell! Basically it's your choice where you wanna go! God told us how we can enter both, and it's clearly up to our decision where we wanna go! Most people don't believe it's real, so they don't believe in God, and when they die, it's too late! They are going to Hell and it's just so sad, but it's their choice they made, but Christians or any believer of God can influence the non believers to believe in God, and then they can go to Heaven.
Now your other question, there is only ONE God! It was the peoples choices to believe there are other Gods! In the bible, God had to wipe out EVERYONE on the planet, except for Noah! Reason being, because people were NOT listening to him! They were worshiping other "gods", ect. So he flooded the place, and made the rainbow saying he will never flood again, no matter how badly he will want to at some times! But this time he decided I'm not gonna fight against the people, I'm just going to let them choose! A bible will be made later years of the true events and people to show that I am real, and Heaven is real, and Hell is real! And then came all the very important people in the bible, whose task was to tell people God is real, and to influence their minds, since they do have choices, that God is real! So instead of flooding the Earth again over and over when there are bad people, or many people are worshiping other "gods" he just sends them to Hell when their lives are over on Earth! Now people think that's not fair! I need a second chance, but here's the thing! God has given us second chances! He has given more chances to us than we even think! He is the one patient! He is the one letting us choose, but he will give us chances to choose again if we fail! So out of all these chances he gives us, and we still will fail them and go OUR own way, then we will be sent to Hell! Simple as that! If we didn't give God any chances, then why should he give us chances when we are already in Hell? He already gave us many on Earth!
No for doubting! It's okay to doubt sometimes, when your like ready the bible, and your like wait God, are you sure.... or God I'm really not sure.... But doubt when you got questions, not doubt God in bad ways at all!
No offense, but this doesn't really prove anything. You are basically saying all or Christianity is true because the bible says so. This approach can be used to justify any religion. If you believe the bible, than it gives the answers to your questions, but there is no proof that the bible is true. Many parts of it are demonstrably false, and some parts are contradictory. In my opinion, the bible really isn't evidence.
To the OP, you say you want to explore before committing to a religion. You do have another option which is no religion. All religions require a certain amount of faith. If you are okay with that and think that there are ways of knowing other than science, than go ahead and find the religion than makes you happiest. I personally am an atheist because I don't like believing without evidence.

Christians or any believer of God can influence the non believers to believe in God, and then they can go to Heaven.
Mmm... Unless I misread Christ's philosophy, you don't need to believe in the Christian God to be accepted in the "Heaven".
So instead of flooding the Earth again over and over when there are bad people, or many people are worshiping other "gods" he just sends them to Hell when their lives are over on Earth!
Huuu... What? Many actions and preaches of Jesus made it clear that religious practice was not what made a man worthy of access to "Heaven". What counts is how close you stick to the ethics he defended.
If we didn't give God any chances, then why should he give us chances when we are already in Hell? He already gave us many on Earth!
Because the Christian God is supposed to be a forgiving being of infinite compassion.
No for doubting! It's okay to doubt sometimes, when your like ready the bible, and your like wait God, are you sure.... or God I'm really not sure.... But doubt when you got questions, not doubt God in bad ways at all!
Doubting is a good thing, because not doubting of your actions means not analyzing them, not trying to measure if they were good or bad, etc. Put everything in doubt, even the Bible, and, if you are a Christian, *especially* the Bible. Because again, as Jesus makes clear, it is not texts and rituals that matter; it is your ethics and how you believe in them. Denying doubt over the texts means you'll get trapped in a dogmatic view of your religion.

just because the Bible says hell and heaven exists doesn't mean they do. and God should show himself if he wants more of us to go to heaven
@OP: in my opinion, hell does not exist. it's made up by Christians to try to scare us into being good.
it is your decision to explore other faiths. don't let anyone stop you. to some, maybe you'll be eternally damned, but why should you believe them? as for how many gods, there are none (again, my opinion)

Not really. The bible makes it pretty clear that faith is more important than what you do in life.
Ephesians 2:8-9(NIV)
8*For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9*not by works, so that no one can boast.
Titus 3:4-5(NIV)
4*But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5*he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
Because the Christian God is supposed to be a forgiving being of infinite compassion.
Mark 3:28-29(NIV)
28*Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29*but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”
The Christian god is not infinitely forgiving. Blasphemy against the holy spirit is unforgivable, according to the bible.

I completely agree that doubt is a good thing. However, the bible makes it clear that faith is the way to salvation. What you do is less important.

I personally believe they are real. Why does he send them to hell? It is because you have not turned to him and asked him for your forgiveness and for him to lead your life. If you believe in God, the new covenant says that you don't necessarily have to pray for forgiveness, but you need to just thank him for it. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, all sins were forgiven if you were to follow and live your life with him in it. In the old covenant you had to ask for your forgiveness to a priest and they go into the holy of holies where they do a sacrifice to forgive all the sins of that year. When He died on the cross, the curtain to the holy of holies was torn symbolizing that everyone is free if they are to believe and let him into your life.
Is knowledge evil, I'm not certain about this, but I believe it is/was because in the old testamant knowledge is what led humanity to question, it led them to the yes or no which made them less believable in God. But that was in the old testament so I'm not sure because the old testamant went with the old covenant which is where you had to ask for forgiveness and now in the new testamant it is a promise almost between us about how you are forgiven as long as you let him lead your life.
Some people don't believe in the bible. Me personally I do. There is someone at my church who had 2 big tumors on their lungs and were told they only had a few months to live. We did this pray circle thing, and the next time they went to the doctors, the tumor on the right lung was completely gone, and the tumor on the left lung was like 2 cm after. That was in like May/June when they were told they had a couple months to live. They are still here now and they are fine and healthy now.

Not really. The bible makes it pretty clear that faith is more important than what you do in life.
Read me again, please. I wrote about actions and preaches of Jesus (emphasis added). Ephesians and Titus were speeches and letters written by Paul (or at least, attributed to him). I never claimed that everybody was in agreement across the Bible (which is also why I think critical reading of the sacred texts is fundamental for a proper understanding of them).
The Christian god is not infinitely forgiving. Blasphemy against the holy spirit is unforgivable, according to the bible.
Noted - I didn't know/remember that (granted, I'm no Christian, and not a specialist of the Bible either).
I completely agree that doubt is a good thing. However, the bible makes it clear that faith is the way to salvation. What you do is less important.
And read me once again, please: I was speaking about the ethics of Jesus, not of the ethics of the Bible - they are, at least to me, two very different things. This probably explains why I'm not Christian, since I mostly subscribe the the philosophy proposed by Jesus, but find myself in fundamental disagreement with the philosophy offered by other biblical prophets and authors.
(Side note to the one that gave me negative rep for my previous post here: next time, try to be more courageous and say who you are. I value people who aren't afraid of defending their opinions much more than those practicising cheap Yoda-speech anonymously.)

No. But you are claiming it did, so it's up to you to prove it. The burden of proof rests on the one who makes the claim. We shouldn't assume any claim is true just because it can't be disproven. There is also the plausibility of the claim to consider. In light of the lack of evidence, and with the extreme implausibility, why should we accept your claim about heaven and hell.
If you don't agree, here is an example. Can you prove that there isn't an invisible unicorn in the sky that created the universe? No. It's an implausible claim, but you can't prove it's false. However, should we assume it's true? No.

So what you're saying here, is that religion is like an invisible unicorn in the sky? That's what people get mad about. Atheists compare religion to outrageous ideas. The one ego claims doesn't have to have proof, plus, there are multiple eye-witness accounts. Look it up. Those accounts aren't in the bible.

I think they are analogous. Neither has proof and both are implausible. The only difference is that religion is widely believed.

Intelligent design is a theory. Like any scientific theory it cannot be proven or disproven. You can make a theory seem very unlikely, but ultimately there is always a loop hole. To believe everything in the bible is literal is very difficult, because it overlaps with theories that have many, many more supports from scientific laws, etc. The only reason I identify as an agnostic is that there is no way to disprove what Christians believe. It would be unscientific to completely dismiss it. If I were a Christian (I was at one time) I would look at the bible in a metaphorical sense. For instance, the world was created in a week, according to the bible. Where as other theories, with many more supports show that the earth and the universe were formed over the course of billions of years. So perhaps it is a metaphor. In reality, maybe 1 day and night are the equivalent of 2 or 3 billion years to God. So I think that it is likely that hell is also a metaphor, but it all depends on what you would like to believe, you have to accept it on faith considering the lack of scientific supports.
That leads to my next question: is knowledge evil, or is it the way it's used that is evil???
I don't think God wanted us to think that learning things was a bad thing. On the other hand, they had never eaten from that tree God would still be giving them everything they ever needed. They had no need for knowledge. But now since God cast them out it forced humans to turn to that knowledge. They chose free will over being sheep, good for them. Also God likes being a dick and "testing" his followers, so this could have been a really big practical joke, who knows.
I ask these things because I have a hard time believing the Bible in general. I find it hard to accept the idea that God would send any of his creations to hell, or condemn them for knowing. Wouldn't he/she/it want people to live up to their full potential and know all they can know? Isn't knowledge beautiful???
Refer to the above two posts

Intelligent design isn't a theory, at best it's a hypothesis. A theory is an explanation for a phenomenon supported by a large amount of evidence. While it is true that theories can't be proven, they can be disproven. When a hypothesis has enough evidence, it is termed a theory. The theory is never proven, but deemed true based on the supporting evidence. Disconfirming evidence can disprove a theory.
I don't think it would be unscientific to dismiss intelligent design. There is practically no good evidence for it. We also have much better explanations for how everything came about (big bang, abiogenesis, evolution). What many Christians believe is completely unfalsifiable, and therefore unscientific. However, due to the lack of evidence, it's unreasonable to consider it true.
As for the bible being a metaphor, there is no way to disprove it. If everything of phrased so that it is consistent with current science, a belief in a god can't be disproven. Occam's razor should be considered and since Christianity makes an unnecessary assumption, there is no reason to believe in a god. The issue of faith is not a scientific one, since faith is really the opposite of science. Faith is a choice, but people should acknowledge the lack of evidence and not try to bend science to fit their beliefs.

A supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, esp. one based on general principles independent of the thing to be...: "Darwin's theory of evolution"
I theorize that the sun and moon are being pushed by gigantic Nyan cats. That is a theory. I intended to explain why the sun and moon set. Prove me wrong. What's that? You say that we've been into space and never seen them? Ok well they are invisible Nyan cats. This is obviously ridiculous, I'm just trying to make a point.

The colloquial definition of theory is little more than an educated guess. The scientific usage of the word is very different. According to the American Asscoiation for the Advancement of Science
A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world. The theory of biological evolution is more than "just a theory." It is as factual an explanation of the universe as the atomic theory of matter or the germ theory of disease. Our understanding of gravity is still a work in progress. But the phenomenon of gravity, like evolution, is an accepted fact.
Or according to the United States National Accademy of Science
The formal scientific definition of theory is quite different from the everyday meaning of the word. It refers to a comprehensive explanation of some aspect of nature that is supported by a vast body of evidence. Many scientific theories are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them substantially. For example, no new evidence will demonstrate that the Earth does not orbit around the sun (heliocentric theory), or that living things are not made of cells (cell theory), that matter is not composed of atoms, or that the surface of the Earth is not divided into solid plates that have moved over geological timescales (the theory of plate tectonics)...One of the most useful properties of scientific theories is that they can be used to make predictions about natural events or phenomena that have not yet been observed.
Your "theory" about the sun and moon is just a hypothesis. Something that is a theory has a huge amount of evidence for it. Intelligent design, which has no evidence, is just an implausible hypothesis.

The colloquial definition of theory is little more than an educated guess. The scientific usage of the word is very different. According to the American Asscoiation for the Advancement of Science
Or according to the United States National Accademy of Science
Your "theory" about the sun and moon is just a hypothesis. Something that is a theory has a huge amount of evidence for it. Intelligent design, which has no evidence, is just an implausible hypothesis.
