Shy Guys

So I've been dating this guy for awhile and he is really really shy and I'm relatively quiet myself. When we hang out in a group he's perfectly sociable and sometimes when we're alone he's okay. But whenever the moment turns serious and we are really close he shuts down and backs away. Does he not want anything remotely intimate (even kissing) or is he just scared? Will he ever be that guy who's playful and comfortable with his girlfriend?:what:

He could just be nervous about getting that intimate with somebody. Have you tried talking to him about it? If you don't confront him about the issue then it most likely will not get resolved. He's your boyfriend, so he should hear you out on what you have to say. Don't be mean or anything, just be straight forward and tell him what's been on your mind and how it makes you feel. If he's able to have that conversation then that's a step in the right direction, and if he gets uncomfortable then at least it might strike a little bit of a nerve and get him thinking about it.
