Two dead, nine wounded in shooting near the Empire State Building (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/multiple-people-hit-shooting-near-empire-state-building-133611266.html)

Nine people were wounded and two people were dead Friday after a shooting outside the Empire State Building in the Midtown area of Manhattan. The two dead include the gunman, who was shot and killed by police near the tourist entrance of the landmark skyscraper.

The gunman, a 53-year-old women's accessories designer named Jeffrey Johnson, was fired from his job last year during a corporate downsizing at Hazan Imports. He returned to his office Friday morning to target his 41-year-old boss.

The shooting occurred at 9:03 a.m. ET on West 33rd Street.

Johnson followed his co-worker down 33rd Street and shot him outside of Legends Bar, according to the New York Post. It is unclear if he fired into a crowd of pedestrians outside of the Empire State Building, or if pedestrians were caught in crossfire, reported the New York Daily News.

A construction worker who witnessed the shooting followed the suspect and then alerted police who were posted nearby. As the officers approached Johnson, he pulled his gun and fired on the officers. They returned fire and killed him, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

None of the other people who were shot were seriously wounded and they are all expected to recover. Some of those wounded may have been hit by police gunfire, Bloomberg said.

After the shooting, police immediately cordoned off a one-block perimeter around the Empire State Building. Around 10 a.m., a lone tourist bus headed down Fifth Avenue, and a guide could be heard over the bus's microphone explaining that they were nearing the landmark. As police waved the bus to detour down 36th Street, the guide was openly mystified. "I don't know what's going on, folks," he said, as the bus turned. The bus's passengers looked up at the sky at a news helicopter floated overhead. Some stood, clutching their cameras.

Along 35th street, hundreds of people photographed the scene with iPhones and iPads. Officers could be seen standing in the middle of 34th Street around a scene surrounded by police tape. Television producers roamed the crowd looking for witnesses. "Was anybody here when this happened? Was anybody here when this happened?" one NBC producer yelled.

Eyewitnesses told CNN that the gunman was using a rifle or shotgun.

Word of the shooting spread rapidly on social media networks.

"On 5th avenue surrounded by helicopters and police," @CeciliaHalling wrote on Twitter. "I'm very glad I wasn't 20 blocks further down half an hour ago."

lol What?

There are LOADS of shootings happening all around this country every day, only a tiny fraction of those are covered by the national media. Does it really surprise you?

I think that'd happen if you pointed a gun at any cop. Or anyone else with a gun.

Cops are trained to shoot until the problem has been eliminated, but nine is a very big number considering it wasn't a huge shoot out. It just makes me think the cops need better aim.

I was not there, but unfourtunately things like this still occur. especially in a large metropolis that is New York.

So, Yahoo posted an article saying the two cops who killed the gunman also shot the 9 victims. I don't think he was even firing at the crowd.
That's kind of scary...

Na. Give New Yorkers more guns. That will keep'em safe. Is that what's you are going to say? Indubitably.

The thing is, they are trained to shoot still objects. Which makes me wonder even more.

I dont know why you people dont get this. If you give the good people guns the crime rate will go down because they will be able to defend them selves. If yout take guns away the crime rate will get higher because teh bad guys will always get guns. its that hard to under stand. More good people have guns=less crime. good people not haveing guns=more crime because they cant defend them selves its that easy.

Bahahahaha!

Good people. Bad people. Kids past 9 know there is no such thing.

Dear friend. In reality, there is no such thing as good and bad.

Human's psyche is so complex that you cannot just easily designate them in either of cases. Our morality differs from person to person. We are not carbon copy of each other.

Also, why don't you understand that people don't like the sight of a gun?

You might like guns. They way they look, feel etc. Most of us don't. Atleast get this bit.

It's a tool of death. Not a machine that spreads flowers.

Of course this thread turns into a debate...
Also, I don't recall anyone speaking of banning guns, so I don't know where the above post got that from. PR, you come across as really hostile when someone disagrees with you.

Anyways, NYC cops need more training. They were about 10 feet from him and still managed to injure nine people. He was walking slowly too. Someone send them to the firing range or something.

You know it's not just liberals who are for gun control, right? There's plenty of conservatives that are for stricter gun control too. Yet not by your view. Nope, all of us liberals think guns should be illegal. Do you even comprehend what I just said in my last post? You simply could have moved on to another thread. But you let your little obsession with firearms get in the way and try to be the big man in defending guns. This is why people don't like your style of "debating". You take it way too seriously.

Wait wait wait. I thought people were supposed to take debating serious? I thought debateing was serious thing in general. Are you telling me that debating inst a serious thing?

Well, I'm all for guns, or I really don't care. The argument, though, that it's against the Constitution is always up for debate though. After all, it is up the Congress and the Supreme Court to decide what the right to bear arms actually means. Since the Constitution is supposed to have a vague interpretation. It's really what ever they decide, which how it seems to me, gun control is going to have some major issues in the following years.

He still could have used a knife. Better ban knives. He still could have used his fists. Better ban using our hands in a violent manner. He still could have run the guy over with his car. Better ban cars. You see where your argument takes you?

Knives, only if you know what you're doing and where to aim. Guns are usually slower, depending where you shoot the target and at what range.

No it would not. Even if all citizens of New York were given guns, their moral ethics also come into play. When they are in need to shoot somebody in haste, are they actually going to do it? Or would they be a spectator in the crowd, a more likely answer.

Knives, only if you know what you're doing and where to aim. Guns are usually slower, depending where you shoot the target and at what range.

Knives, only and only if you are proficient with it, and if you know the arts of close range combat.
Anyone can parry a an untrained hand knife strike. If you strike landed, unless it is a vital organ, that area will spasm, but the rest will continue to work to defend your body.

Oh, and you have to be at a really close range. Your best bet is a cheap shot at the back withou your target is not suspecting it.

Gun can be learned at a much easier rate.

Gun can be shot at a reasonable range without sacrificing accuracy. And there are plenty of low maintenance guns for those who lack knoweledge in gun anatomy.

Only an idiot tries to bring up the gun really close to the target. Oh, there he redirects the line of fire. Oh! He twisted his wrist and gave him right in the twins.

Guns also produce a shock due to its loud noise causing momentary disorientation to the untrained ears.

A gun shot is able stop the body regardless of where it hits, especially near vital organ. What I mean that it goes to spasm because of a gun shot wound.
Hit the lower body, and you just destroyed its mobility. Hit the upper body, and you have just destroyed its retaliation capabilities.

So, you still thing knife is an easier to kill with? Well, from the looks of it, child soldiers are given automatic rifles, not Kukris.
