Microsoft opens window to new era as it changes its logo for the first time in 25 YEARS
It is Microsoft's first new logo since February 1987
Company changed logo as it prepares to launch a series of new products
Microsoft's logo has a new look, setting the stage for a wave of products designed to cast the world's largest software maker in a new light.
The makeover unveiled on Thursday marks the first time that Microsoft has revamped its logo since February 1987. The Internet was barely around then, and cellphones were considered a luxury.
At the time, Microsoft was putting the finishing touches on the second version of its Windows operating system. Two of Microsoft's biggest nemeses - Google Inc. co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin - were just 13 years old. And Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs was just in the second year of an 11-year exile from the company that went on to invent the iPod, iPhone and iPad after he returned.

Yeah, that is pretty damn funny. I'm just sick of logos changing. People, stick with something, please.

It's stupidly pathetic that these billion dollar companies waste money on a new logo. Design, then the progamming..
Personally, My face logo for Microsoft was 1980, but it never needed to change to that to begin with.
As Alex said above, yes. People need to stick to ONE logo.

The new logo is 10 years late. I don't know what's with these minimalist logos? Probably to cut costs, I guess.

This new logo is more complicated, really. It has colors now. This is just one of hundreds of corporate changes Microsoft will probably be adopting to get rid of the widespread belief that they're an evil, stone-cold corporation. They want to be hip like Apple. It's kind of sad, really, because reception towards their newer stuff, like the Zune, Windows Phones and even Windows 8 hasn't been that great.
I think the logo looks good, though.

Is it really that bad to change their logo once after 30 years? Why does a company need to keep the same logo for its entire lifetime? After all, a company could change its logo every week, but as long as it used that logo for the whole week it would technically be sticking to ONE logo.

What was wrong with the old one? I don't really like the new metro shit they are bringing out. New new style of hotmail looks awful, so does sky drive.

In all honesty, I don't really care. I am personally quite fond of the simplistic logos, but I don't see why it should be a news story (well, actually I do. It is, because Daily Mail). Another thing I don't understand is why people are saying that they ought to stick with one logo. Companies have to change with the times, whether it's their logo, their products or their interaction with customers. 25 years is actually a surprisingly long time for a company the size of Microsoft to stick with one logo.

Actually, many professionals say that companies that have the same logo for extended periods of time loose people's business. It's good and refreshing to add a new logo.
not to mention, the old one sucked...
I find it refreshing, sleek, and modern. I don't know why people are giving it so much shit.
