Just something for fun. Put a classic band up against a current band to see who comes out on top. Will also love to hear some suggestions of potential future competitiors:
Pink Floyd:
250 million albums sold worldwide.
3 Albums included in top '100 all time best selling albums'.
9th highest selling artist of all time.
Coldplay:
55 million albums sold worldwide.
7 time Grammy award winners.
Highest selling artists of 2005

Pink Floyd. Coldplay isn't bad, but it also isn't nearly as iconic as Pink Floyd is.

You sure you met him mate, and not just lying to sound cool? I think if you met him you would know his name is actually David, not Peter.

coldplay did not make echoes. coldplay did not make the masterpiece ideas for the movie "the wall". Coldplay is alternative rock baby music. Pink Floyd is progressive rock and psychedelic rock. Pink Floyd obviously fuckin' triumphs. Jesus fuckin' Christ, i'm offended like bullets to the chest that people would like coldplay more than PF as if Coldplay was more talented.

Comparing bands by how successful they are in sales and awards isn't even a valid form of critique.
Pink Floyd. Coldplay isn't bad, but it also isn't nearly as iconic as Pink Floyd is.
Yeah, but that's measuring both bands by their "icon" status. Pink Floyd is iconic because their music was able to stay relevant. Decades from now, when Coldplay reaches the age of the remaining Pink Floyd members, they'll probably be called iconic too.
Pink Floyd wins this without question. Coldplay is basically a very watered down alternative rock band with little to no variation on their albums (though the last two albums with Brian Eno as producer did come out as a light 6/10 for me). When you have a band like Pink Floyd that experiments to the extent they did, you can't compare them to Coldplay. Take a listen to the studio side of "Ummagumma" and find the albums "Meddle", "A Saucerful of Secrets", "Atom Heart Mother", "More", and "Obscured By Clouds". Then come back and tell us if Coldplay can match shit like that. Don't fuck with Floyd.

" Comparing bands by how successful they are in sales and awards isn't even a valid form of critique. "
Did I say to judge them based on their success? No I did not. The accomplishments of each band are there because I thought it would be useful and interesting to look at each of their respective careers. If I had of said judge them on their success and pick a winner, then it is a no contest and Pink Floyd win by first round knock out. It was there just to be a bit insightful and that's it.

I'll consider this question more deeply when Coldplay writes an album as ridiculously good as Animals, Meddle, The Wall or Wish You Were Here.
I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

You didn't even offer your own opinion. Giving us the accomplishments of both bands over their careers will lead most of this forum's users to judge based on those accomplishments.

this. Cold play did not make anything what pink floyd made. Pink Floyd is one of if not the most influential band to progresive rock. Pink floyd wins hands down. YOu can not beat pink floyd when it comes to progresive rock

Yeah, not sure who you heard that from. Jethro Tull and ELP were basically at the start of the progressive movement with King Crimson.

Hey Damo my brother, good for you for trying to have a bit of fun by making this thread and creating a bit of a talking point. It's a shame people decide to take it as seriously as they do. I am as big if not a bigger music fan on here than anyone else, but I don't feel the need to shoot down this thread. You clearly made it to be a bit of fun so taking it so insanely serious is a little pathetic.
Good for you for making an effort Damo, and I hope you do more of these threads soon, hopefully the next few will be with the exception of the serious police.
Pink Floyd for me mate, my all time favourite band.

I don't think it's really fair to compare bands from two different generations. My dad likes Floyd, but I doubt he could even name more than 4 Coldplay tunes.
For me, it's Coldplay all the way. A Rush of Blood to the Head is epic beyond epic. :)

If he points at the last two albums, which had pretty decent production, then I could sort of see that.

Pink Floyd has created some of the most complex, provocative, and ground-breaking sounds in rock ever. Coldplay is a very good band and A Rush of Blood to the Head is a great album, but in comparison to Pink Floyd... There just isn't a comparison lol. Many of Pink Floyd's songs, especially the lengthy instrumentals, are the kinds of songs that make you stop everything that you are doing and melt into some kind of psychedelic hypnosis. I may be a little biased, but hey, who isn't?
I do love Coldplay though. Politik, In My Place, Strawberry Swing, and some others I can't remember right now are really great songs. They're a good band.
