mkay in my opinion all those gory movies are slashers. Horror is like supernatural and stuff.
SLASHER -- High Tension...holy shit that is so fucking gory. It made me sick to my stomach. http://www.best-horror-movies.com/images/High-Tension-movie-poster-small.jpg

HORROR -- 1408. Stephen king fucking rocks...and he scared the shit outta me.

not really man. Horror does not need to be supernatural. The only good supernatural movie I saw was White Noise.

The one with the bloody zombies coming out when you least expect who tear off people's heads and their eyes and it is so gruesomly bloody! I don't know what it's called, though.

Funny Games U.S. No doubt about it! It's a smarter type of horror.

There are lots of favourites of mine :)
The Shining, Halloween, The Grudge, Saw (all), The Ring, Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silent Hill, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Rising...I could go on.

Though, some horror films are hilarious. I mean, the orginal 70's Texas Chainsaw Massacre is pathetic and LOL-worthy. Same for Psycho and Nightmare on Elm Street, they just have me laughing too much :S

Oh and if you like gory, sickening, disturbing movies. Then you should watch Hostel and Hostel 2. Both of those are f*cked up and real sinister. I don't find it scary but it sure as hell creeped me out a little.

My friend said Hostel sh!t her up pretty good.

The only films that ever creeped me out were Scarred [because I always went camping] and Creep [just can't watch it without cringing a thousand times].

The orignal Halloween was pretty good, but I haven't seen the other two. Here are my choices (which, you'll note, were not on the list xP):

The Happening is more of a thriller than horror I think, and I normally am disappointed with M. Night Shyamalan's endings. However, I think it turned out pretty good, I actually found myself a little freaked out at points.

My all-time favorite would have to be Friday the 13th Part V though. I like all of the Friday the 13th films, classic slasher flicks, but Part V is always my favorite. It has a unique ending from the other 11 (counting Freddy vs. Jason and the as-yet-unreleased re-make), which is a refreshing change. I know the effects are outdated, and that makes it much less believable than modern films, but I'm a huge Jason fan all the same.

Wow, this is an old thread. I must say that Hostel was really a fucked up movie. I can't even stand the thought of the movie. 1408 is a pretty good one. I do agree with you there Jess that MNS movies typically don't have good endings. Take "The Village" for example......

If any of you like horror movies with a good amount of swearing then you should see "The Mist". Great movie and book from Stephen King.

OMG peoples! Insanitarium is AWESOME!!! Easily made it into my top horrors.

As soon as I started watching it, I wanted to know how it ended, despite cringing at all of the bloody bits every ten seconds!

My favourite horror genre films are The Host and The Hills have Eyes.

However, if we are going for gore and shocks as horror, some of the worst are Frontier(s), Salo, Cannibal Holocaust. These ones make Hostel and Saw seem pretty tame.

Cannibal Holocaust is done by one of the most notorious and brutle directors in Horro Movie history, I really want to see The Phantom of Death by the same guy because that looks really good.

I personally like Prom Night and Disturbia. Yet you can never go wrong with the Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween movies.

I wouldn't really know, but I would prefer horror movies with suspense, not just blood everywhere. I've become desensitized to that stuff.

Poltergeist was quite good, but what scared me the most was that damn clown. Seriously, what kind of parent buys their children something like that thing? I remember it when it dragged the kid under his bed.

I had nightmares for a few weeks. Joy.

Not seen Disturia... But I agree that Prom Night is one of the better horrors made recently... However, Nightmare on Elm Street & the Halloweens induce giggling in the case of my frineds and I :P

This is going to sound corney but I think the original Dracula with Bella Lougosi. (i don't know how to spell that. :-?)

Also the first Halloween and the new My Bloody Valentine 3-D. (the effects were pretty top notch.
