You don't want to tell her you like her because you'd rather she didn't know, than know and not care? They're two completely different points, you can't have both. You either tell her and accept what she thinks about you, or don't tell her and never know.

Anyway, she probably has some idea that you fancy her and doesn't care. If you say it, I'd say she'd take it as a compliment and find it flattering.

Example: I've a friend at the moment who fancies me and hasn't said anything. I know he does because it's just so obvious the whole time to everyone (I even had friends asking me when we started going out because we were so "coupley" together. I stopped that carry on to make sure I wasn't leading him on though.). Anyway, I don't fancy him and I know that if he said something, I'd find it awkward at first but then I'd get over it.

I think he means he would prefer she does not know he likes her, rather than her knowing he likes her and not caring.
