Paedophile 'given Viagra in prison'

A convicted French paedophile accused of raping a five-year-old boy just a month after being released from jail said he was prescribed Viagra by his prison doctor.
Francis Evrard was arrested last week after police found him and the child both partially clothed in a garage in Roubaix, near Lille. Authorities found the drug on the 61-year-old when he was taken into custody.
The repeat offender — who was released after serving 18 years of a 27-year sentence for child rape — said he was given the drug after he told the prison doctor he had erection problems.
"He says very clearly that he asked for these products in prison and that they gave him a prescription which he collected when he was released," his lawyer Jerome Pianezza told French media.
The man described by one court psychologist as an "incorrigible hunter of young boys" had been paroled last month on condition he lived in Rouen in Normandy and take drugs to curb his sexual desires.
However, within a month of his release he had moved to Lille and assumed a false identity.
Lawyers for the family of the child found with Evrard are outraged at his treatment, though investigators are yet to officially establish the source of his Viagra prescription.
"If it’s true, it’s totally scandalous when you consider what sort of man he is,†said the family's lawyer Emmanuel Rigilaire.
“The family is disgusted and worried that someone like this could have been prescribed Viagra. It’s the world upside down.â€
"They give him the weapons to start again."
The case has renewed debate in France about whether or not repeat sex offenders should be chemically castrated. President Nicholas Sarkozy has called an emergency meeting with justice officials and local police to discuss the Evrard case.
