Five people have gone on trial in China for illegal organ trading and intentional injury after a student sold his kidney to buy an iPad and iPhone.
The defendants include the surgeon who removed the kidney from the 17-year-old in the central province of Hunan.
They face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The teenager, who suffered renal failure after the transplant, was said to be too sick to attend the hearing.
The student, identified only as Wang, was recruited in an online chat room, according to prosecutors.
They accused one of the defendants, He Wei, of arranging the illegal kidney transplant last April in order to pay his gambling debts.
The group is said to have received around $35,000 (£22,000) for the transplant, while the student was reportedly given about $3,000 for his kidney.

Yeah..I remember reading about this maybe a couple months ago..it's pretty crazy what technology can do to people these days. So ridiculous that you'd give up body parts just to fit in, and be like everyone else with the fads of society these days.

Hi we don't think this is right, but always try and understand there may be more to this than is in the article. It is good that you share this with the vT community -- Aidan

It's old. But pretty stupid, if you ask me.
There are cheaper but of good quality tablets. And all this kid found was iPad? What the fuck.
If I had the money, I'd bought an Asus tablet or some other shit.
There are 100$ tablets now. Solid tablets.

I don't see what the big deal is. People can live perfectly healthily with only one kidney.

Even though this is true..
Living with only 1 kidney still has its drawbacks..not being able to filter out the toxins in your body only half as effective as it used to be.
Prone to more kidney related problems, being unbalanced, unable to participate in physical activities as much as before due to risk of injury, and some dietary changes would have to be made as well with only 1 kidney functioning and processing all the things that the body digests.

Did you read where it said the kid had renal failure after te transplant? That meant his kidney stopped working.

I heard that on the radio 2 days ago. Kind of funny but sad at the same time.

I don't think that's the type of publicity they're looking for.
Breaking news: Apple makes commercial about kid selling kidney to buy products -- lawsuits from humanitarian organisations?
