You'll probably find what you're searching for here. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313329)

Make sure the file your downloading is for your device. If it is not, you will get errors like this.

Any of those would do the job. They are just different flavors/mods. In doubt, pick one of the "CM7" (Cyanogenmod) ones for Android Gingerbread. ICS will also work, but it is slower, so I wouldn't recommend it on your phone.

I own a Samsung Galaxy I-9000. I'm currently using the stock 2.3.6, but rooted. I've tried several custom roms, including ICS ones on it. They offer various tweaks and gadgetery, but none that I really needed. The best I've used was the CyanogenMod 7 - not because it had the most impressive tweaks, but because it was one of the most polished, stable ones around.

Many of the custom roms are "better" in that they contain tweaks to correct some issues, performance/eyecandy improvements, etc. If you are unsure if you need any of those, first flash the latest "official" firmware for your device, root it, and check to see if it is sufficient for you, or if you need/want more. For most purposes, the default will do fine.
