So I'm on antibiotics for my acne and I've been on it for two years. For some reason, every time I started working out and eating right, I saw no changes! Well I looked up if antibiotics had anything to do not being able to lose weight. And behold it does! It messes with your gut flora and makes it hard to lose weight. Has anyone seen or experienced the same thing. Please tell me I'm now alone :what:

"Antibiotics" is a very broad term. Different ones have different side effects. I looked at this (http://dermatology.about.com/cs/antibiotics/a/acneabx.htm) website, which has a list of commonly prescribed ance-treatment medications. None of these medications seem to have such a side effect. I also did a bit more research here (www.nlm.nih.gov), and still, none of the most common side effects was what you described.

I think you most likely read about this for a more common antibiotic, not the one you use. I doubt that this is really a side effect, and I think it is just the way you are "trying" to lose weight.
I'm not a doctor, and if you're truly concerned, then ask your GP.

I used your second link to look up if amoxicillin and weight gain were related and it says that they'll put people with severe malnutrition on them to help get back to a healthy weight.

A lot of other research says that farmers will give their livestock antibiotics to give them a weight boost. And I just want to see if anyone else that sees this might have the same realization

You are continuously on amoxicillin for acne?

Right now yes. I have been for around 2 years. I just started a new workout program and I had some flashbacks of other times I tried and I had no changes. I don't eat bad. And I'm pretty active. I just tried to connect these things because my dermatologist told me yesterday she thinks its time to try and get off of it. I'm not trying to make excuses. It's just kinda stressful to do all the hard work and not get payed ya know?

I think the best thing is to check with your doctor and see what they say. Many side effects of drugs can be felt by a few people on them. And yes antibiotics effect the gut. Maybe to they make you feel hungry so you eat more or crave fatty foods. This has to be very general as I am sure you realise.

So can you ask your doc about a change of meds and some help to diet.

Even a small change in diet say fruit instead of snacks and drinking water instead of sodas as well as a bit of excersise can help.

I have never tried this but there are some yogurt type drinks and yogurts on the market which maintain a healthy gut.

Antibiotics can also make you constipated or prevents healthy bowel.

Again something to ask your doctor is maybe to stop the antibiotics for a few days or weeks ( again ask your doctor) this may be enough time to restore your gut. But please note I am 13 and not a doctor but I had to take painkillers and antibiotics before and they messed me up completly.

It is very hard if you are trying to get healthy and lose weight and its not working - I can only say keep trying and once you lose a bit the next bit is easier then you get fitter can excersise more and lose more.

But if you build some muscle - muscle is heavier to so the weight loss is not huge but you have shed fat and built muscle

Hope this helps but see your doc.

I know you aren't trying to make excuses. I didn't think you'd be on amoxicillin because I thought that medication is used in more acute situations. Regardless, just talk to your dermatologist. I'm sure he/she could give you tips with dieting while on the medication, or, if they think it's the right time to get off of it.

There is much more better antibiotics for treatment of acne than Amoxicillin or Azithromycin like Clindamycin .

or you can go for topical treatment with creams which contain benzoyl peroxide , it cause skin dryness but it doesn't affect all your body .

my GF used Roaccutane for her acne and it was very effective as it totally removed the acne , but the problem that it has so many dangerous and serious side effects "but she prefer to die than to live with acne :)" and she stopped it now and she is acne free.

Sorry , i forgot to answer your question , i don't think antibiotics make you gain weight , vice versa ... it makes you lose weight as it make the body weaker .
it consume your energy as it makes the immunity weak and it kills the normal flora in our body , that's why we shouldn't use antibiotics unless prescribed by physician or pharmacist for serious issues.
