I'm not sure about you guys, but this mars landing is really exciting for me. Its technology we've never used before, and we've made it to mars in record time.
352 million miles in 8 months, not bad.

Tonight, on the planet Mars, the United States of America made history.

The successful landing of Curiosity – the most sophisticated roving laboratory ever to land on another planet – marks an unprecedented feat of technology that will stand as a point of national pride far into the future. It proves that even the longest of odds are no match for our unique blend of ingenuity and determination.

Tonight’s success, delivered by NASA, parallels our major steps forward towards a vision for a new partnership with American companies to send American astronauts into space on American spacecraft. That partnership will save taxpayer dollars while allowing NASA to do what it has always done best – push the very boundaries of human knowledge. And tonight’s success reminds us that our preeminence – not just in space, but here on Earth – depends on continuing to invest wisely in the innovation, technology, and basic research that has always made our economy the envy of the world

So if we're using nuclear power to launch space craft in 2012, what do you guys think the future has in store for us?

Also do you think they're going to find water/remnants of water on mars? I know we've found indication that mars once had water, but do you think we'll find any below the surface?

I can't wait to see what Curiousity digs up. :yeah:

EDIT: Not sure if this should be in rotw or daily chronicle, please move where it would be suited best. Thanks.

Well there is a frozen ice cap on Mars...and that's water, just frozen. I fell that within the next 100 years we won't get as far as we hoped, we won't be at flying cars or anything, we will just slow down. The past 20 years have been full of inventions and creations, and I hope it continues...but I feel it will start to slow down.

Why is the article so America centered?
Hell, it's about Mars and they only mention it, what, once?
And why is your economy the envy of the world?

I agree with Adam, it'll probably slow down. Oh well. At least we've come this far, and that's pretty damn far when you think about it.

mars will definatly one day become a human colony. probaly in the next 100-200 years. since terraforming takes about 100 years with current technology. it was a huge achivment. but this is only something small towards something huge. i also agree with sudds3. flying cars and stuff is just unessesary and expensive. but a human settlement on mars isint far away. earth is growing in population each year. one day the whole plannet will have overpopulated and poulition will get worse. we will need to expand to other worlds if we want the human race lasting a long time. the moon and mars will most likely become the first human colonies on other worlds. until some sort of faster than light speed travel engine is invented the moon and mars will most likely be the only other human settlements besides earth. moons around jupiter and saturn are just too far away from earth unless until we work out a faster engine (not an FTL drive) this really excites me aswell to know that we are advancing. this is a huge achivment but what about the first mars landing and the first humans to walk on mars? that will be an astonishing achivment. and then the colonzation. then colonzation of other moons in the sol system and then finally intellstear travel. and we can colonize plannets outside the sol system and finally have a fotress among the stars. i wish i could be there to see it......:)

Yes is good that you find it interesting and exciteing, Certainly many challanges have been overcome and more so in the future.

I can't comment on the article, as i didn't write it.
This thread was american related because well, i'm american. My primary concern is going to be about america's advances, not other countries.
If you have any information on other countries advances involving mars/space travel, i'd be happy to learn. :)

Yes but getting that frozen water into a liquid state would mean terraforming mars. That would take a very long time, considering you have to change the climate, atmospheric chemicals, and ground moisture on the entire planet.

I don't agree with the statement about our technology slowing down. Ever since human's have been on earth we've been advancing our technology. Why would we slow down now?
Technology is only going to advance at a much faster rate in the next 20 years. Soon we'll be able to use nuclear power not only in space travel, but in every day use.

What bugged me most was the fact that the post was appointing a complete americanization of future space travel when I actually thought space travel was a giant leap for mankind not only the US...
I'm just allergic to arrogant people, so my opinion is as biased as that article :p

I wasn't overly interested with the probe that landed in 2005 and I'm not too excited now. There's nothing more to learn about the planet.

you're wrong, there's a lot more to learn about mars. It's just as interesting as earth, after thousands of years of human existence we still don't know everything about Earth so each rover will uncover new facts about Mars.
This particular rover is very exciting as it is looking for evidence of microbial life:)

We've seen Mars 7 years ago. I hope there is life there... that means if we put an air conditioned dome on Mars it could be home... like in Science fiction stories by Isaac Asimov.

I agree with that. You think like me, I'm going to die happy if we can ever visit stars as a human race. ^^

Stars are way too hot, we have a much better chance with planets. :)

I think it's pretty cool. Other countries have tried to land stuff on mars but we are the only ones that have succeeded. I'd love to find evidence of life in our solar system. I believe there must be life in the universe other than us but it would be so cool if it was this close to home. Apparently another good place to look is saturns moon Enceladus.

If it were possible to Terraform mars then it would take a lot longer than 100 years. If it is possible then I wouldn't have thought that mar's gravational field would be strong enough to hold on to the artificial atmosphere.

and thats the problem we cant comprehend stuff like this since we yes dont fully understand it. same with sonething like a slipspace drive our minds can comprehend it. give it another 200-500 years and i think we will be traveling in star ships. but i still dont think we will have flying cars by the 26th century. and even if the technology is invented it most likely wont be for civillian use. getting back on topic now, were basing it on current 21st centruy technologies. we only started understanding this stuff in the last 50-20 years. not even! give it time. in the last 20 years we advanced majorly and from the 1900s-2012.... thats one centry and weve achived what was once thought impossible. nothing is impossible we just dont understand it :D
