The Oglala Sioux Tribe occupies a seemingly prime piece of South Dakota — a vast, scenic reservation that stands near a crossroads for tourists visiting Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the historic Old West town of Deadwood and other popular sites.
But don't look for museums, hotels, restaurants or even many bathrooms here on the Pine Ridge Reservation, because the Lakota make little effort to attract visitors or tourism dollars, despite the fact that they are one of the nation's poorest tribes.
A generation after many other native American sought to harness their history for profit, the Oglala Sioux are still debating how much culture they are willing to share.

I saw this in the latest National Geographic. They had a sad history with hundreds of innocent people being killed. But I like how these photos tell the history of this tribe dating back all the from 1890. Seeing history through photos is a great way to learn about historical events on a whole different level.

*shakes fists in indignant anger* I have Sioux ancestors (thus making me part Sioux) and Native Americans have always held a special place in my heart so... Yeah... I read that National Geographic article too and things like this just enrage me because Native Americans such as the Sioux are still treated like shit... ANYWAY, enough of that rant... I LOVE these pictures. Mostly because they are Native American, but also because they tell the history of our people (yes, even though I'm not full blooded or even half or a fourth, I still consider them my people) in an incredible way. I love the nature and scenery in the photos, but my favorite would have to be the return from the Battle of Wounded Knee because of it's history :)
