Intel Core i5 CPU - Thermal paste

Does the Intel Core i5 come with thermal paste pre-applied? If it doesn't should I put different stuff on?

It comes with a small amount of cheap thermal paste. If there doesn't seem to be any on the i5, apply some.

Alright, I'll buy some better paste. How do I go about putting it on?

Place a dob of paste the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the cpu. than place the heatsink on top of the cpu, this should spread the paste over the cpu.

The CPU itself will not have any thermal paste on it, the heatsink it comes with will though.
You actually won't need to buy any thermal compound unless you plan on using an aftermarket heatsink. The paste that comes pre-applied to the stock Intel heatsink is more than good enough. Trust me. I ran an i7 on the stock heatsink/thermal paste for a while and never saw temps above 70C. You'll be fine on an i5.
