I was diagnosed with HIV when I was 15. I was obviously completely shocked and kind of traumatised. It was one of the main reasons I decided to try and get into Med School. I wanted to be there for people when they were diagnosed with life altering diseases. I wanted to make people better. I wanted to try and find a cure for HIV/AIDS. But recently I've been talking to my ex-girlfriend and she was asking whether it affected me getting into my med school.
Well, I didn't tell them when I applied but now I am wondering. Can they kick me off my course for having HIV? I don't suppose many people would be happy if they found out their doctor had HIV so maybe they wont think it is worth me being a student there.

Many people round the world suffer from HIV, , Diabeties, Cancer and many other diseases, viruses and there are bound to be doctors and nurses that suffer from these so i wouldnt worry and tbh its not a disability it doesnt directly effect your work so they would be in the wrong to kick you off the course.
Btw i love the fact that you have turned something bad into something good and i hope you do well in the course and im sure you will make a great doctor please pm in future to tell me of your progress :)

Would just like to say good on you for the choice you have made, and I would want you as my doctor if I ever needed to go see one wherever you are in the world. As someone who also is going to go in the health related field, hearing that is better then other reasons I hear people say.
Not being from where you are, I couldn't say but Dimitri would be able to give you a definite answer - but from what I do know the only thing they can do is limit your participation in risk procedures which may expose the patient to contracting HIV, so operations etcs.

It should not affect your application and you should be able to stay in med school but if they do kick you out sue them cause thats against the law.
Lucky for you the AIDS foundation 2012 is starting and working towards a cure. A man was also cured being the first man to be cured. His immune system was broken down and they replaced it with healthy stem cells so now he is AIDS free!

I don't think they can prevent you from getting in or kick you out because of it. It shouldn't affect your ability to be a doctor in the future, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you. I will be sure to let you know of my progress. And thanks, I hope that you're right and they can't kick me off!

Thank you! It means a lot that you would want me as your doctor! :) And I agree with the reason thing - whenever I hear someone say they want to become a doctor because it pays well I die a little inside.
Well, if that's the case I guess it should be ok - I don't want to specialise in surgery anyway! I don't know who Dimitri is but if I ever come across him I will make sure to ask him if you think he can give me a more definite answer!

Do you really think I could sure them over something like that? I thought it would be me who would get in trouble :/
Really? I actually hadn't heard that anyone had been completely cured! That's really good to know, thank you!

Thanks. I'm glad to know that everyone seems to think the same way. It gives me much more confidence!
