Quarter of girls 'want plastic surgery'
Monday Aug 13 08:00 AEST

A quarter of teenage girls in Australia say they would get plastic surgery if they could, and two per cent have already gone under the knife, a survey has revealed.

A new study of drug, sex and surgery trends among 4,000 girls aged 11 to 18 has found most are unhappy with their bodies in general - and their weight in particular.

Almost 60 per cent wanted to be lighter on the scales, and 45 per cent said they knew someone with an eating disorder, according to the report published on Monday in the teenage magazine Dolly.

Dr Jenny O'Dea, associate professor of child and adolescent health at the University of Sydney, said while this figure may appear small, it was actually very significant.

"That's 80 girls in the 4,000 questioned who had had some kind of procedure, and that's concerning," said Dr O'Dea, who speculated that these would most likely be "boob jobs".

"I think the whole trend towards plastic surgery is very worrying because there's a big myth that it can actually build true self esteem.

"In the long term, what makes teenage girls really happy are their friends, their relationships and what they do with their lives - nothing to do with how they look."

She said many of these girls would carry their worrying self-image issues into adulthood and would instil these same messages in their own children.

"That is why more needs to be done to try to break this cycle," Dr O'Dea said.

The survey also gives a picture of drug use, showing that three per cent have tried the party drug ice, five per cent had swallowed an ecstasy pill and 13 per cent have smoked marijuana. Only 13 per cent admitted smoking cigarettes.

Meanwhile, about half said they drink alcohol, with one in five confessing to having done something they regret while they were drunk.

When it comes to relationships, almost one in four teen girls were sexually active.

Worryingly, over one third of these sexually active girls said they didn't use condoms, but it was unclear whether they used other forms of protection, like the contraceptive pill.

Global issues, like terrorism and the environment, were a concern for 78 per cent of the sample, while 85 per cent worried about achieving at school. Peer pressures were also a reality for many, with 70 per cent of girls confessing they had been bullied.

Bronwyn McCahon, editor of Dolly, said while it was an exciting time to be a teen "there's no doubt the challenges facing young girls today are greater than ever."

i think its very sad if a person has self esteem so low they think they should have plastic surgery.

Dumb bitches. Sorry, but what the fuck? Probably about 94% of girls are fairly attractive, 5.7% are actually fat and need to lose weight, and .3% might just be ugly, but very few so ugly that nobody can see past it. Girls worry so much about their appearance, but they don't realize that all most guys want is someone nice to talk to and if a relationship develops then they won't care that you're not underweight or that your face and boobs are perfectly symmetrical. Most guys don't like anything bigger than a small to medium D cup anyway. Sure, there are assholes, but the majority of guys mature and see people for who they are. Girls are the ones that bully girls, and they shouldn't be worried about what those bitches think. No decent guys actually like the nasty bitches, anyway.

As long as it makes them happy, then I don't see why not. It's not unhealthy, so why not do it?

Somewhat-realistic numbers I came up with. How many fat girls you encounter depends on where you live.

How is it not unhealthy? Its basically editing whats not supposed to be edited. Its unhealthy for the mind becuase it will lead to wanting more and more done and a loss in money. I dont like the idea of it, thats what makeup and diets were invented for.

Im glad you said "fairly" because otherwise that statement would be innacurate. I still concider a girl fairly attractive if she is abit overweight but not too much and has a decent face. But .3%? Im sure there are alot more ugly girls out there than that. Id say about 5% of the world, in certain countries like America or Canada about 15% are fat and the rest are all fairly. Anyways this isnt really a debate section so ill shut up now

Okay let's not turn it into a debate but, It is their body. And getting plastic surgery to alter your appearance, is a hell of a lot more healthy than say, starving yourself.

And who say's it's not supposed to be edited?

I guess in a way your right. A simple nose job can really improve the looks of a woman or a chin job or whatever. But nothing too drastic. But we all have our own opinions

I don't think theres anything wrong with plastic surgery for adults. It's their life, body, and own choice.

As for 11 to 17 year olds they have no buisniess getting it done. Their body is developing and no plastic surgeon should have kids coming in soley for cosmetic reasons.

I guess I really don't agree with young teenagers doing it. But I think 17+ is okay. I know I've heard stories of girls getting boob-jobs for their graudation.

If they are old enough to get it done, and if it makes them happy, i really don't see anything wrong with it. Old enough to me means that they are both legally old enough, and old enough to be finished developing.
