Picture special: Highlights of Danny Boyle's spectacular and explosive Olympics Opening Ceremony

The London 2012 Olympic Games began with a bang last night as billions tuned into the spectacular Opening Ceremony.
Her Majesty the Queen, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Kenneth Branagh, JK Rowling, the Arctic Monkeys, Mr Bean and David Beckham all played a part in the event, which has been dubbed the Greatest Show on Earth.
There was much debate over who would light the Olympic torch, but in the end the honour was given to seven young British athletes, who were chosen by Olympic legends.
Here Mail Online brings you a selection of the best pictures from British director Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening Ceremony, as well as the proceedings leading up to it...

The Olymics weren't so good this year there. I watched some of it.

I thought that the opening ceremony was actually very good! I thought that the presentation was excellent and I thought it had something to appeal to many tastes.
One thing I would say about it though was that it was very British meaning that others around the world (like the person above me ^^.) may not have got the concept or not enjoyed it that much but it showcassed much of English culture and legacy which British audiences would enjoy. But in the previous olimpics in Beijing they presented their culture to the world just like the UK did last night. I thought overall the UK did a good job
