How do you do it? is it a new thing the newer android phones come with, or is it like an app you have to buy, or do you have to jailbreak it???

Depends on the phone. For my htc i just hold the power button and tap the home button. But with my old droid I had to Root it and install an app. It depends on the Phone. What phone do you have?

Many roms include it if you are rooted, but there are apps in the Play Store for rooted users as well on any rom. Visit XDA (forum.xda-developers.com) and find your device to root your individual device, as it varies.

You don't need to jailbreak it for this.

An easy way to generate screenshots of your Android device is to install the Android SDK on a computer, plug your phone in, and use the debugger's screenshot functionality.

On Android 4.x, volume down + lock button pressed for a few seconds will make a screenshot.

I'm not sure if it's the correct way. But on the samsung galaxy Q, you press the ; down volume key, the power off key and te home key. The only downfall to this is that task manager is opend up, so you have to touch the return key to get rid off it.
Now one, not sure if this is your phone and two there could be an easier way.

There's no such thing as 'jailbreaking' an Android phone as apps can be installed without the use of the market.

So yes, on ice-cream sandwhich (4.x), it's Volume down + Lock,
On HTC Sense 3.5 and above, it's the home button + power button
Some Android phones may have an inbuilt screenshot function in it's power menu, this is mainly in AOKP (Android Open-Kang Project) or CM (CyanogenMod)

If your phone has been rooted then you can get an app from the market that will be able to take screenshots on demand, whereas non rooted phones have a timer based screenshot application where you'll need to prepare yourself on the screen and then the app will take the shot after the time is up.

Depending on how recent your version of android is, look up some online guides on taking screenshots on your phone model.
