I heard about cutting from a friend and on TV. Why do you think people prefer to use a razor or knife to cause themselves pain? That could leave scars. Why don't people use pins or maybe get one of those electric tattoo needles, and just don't put any ink in it. I've never gotten a tattoo before but it might feel sort of similar, and little needle holes will close up in a few days with no permanent scaring.

People have different ways of self harming. I'm sure somebody in the past has done what you said. I think people use knives/blades because (a) you're in more control and (b) it's more likely to be laying around. Tattoo needles cost a lot of money and it's unlikely to have one in your home.

If i want to cause myself pain i will burn myself, if i am going to cut myself its more to do with blood than pain. poking myself with a pin isn't going to do what i want it to do. Did you ever read about the ancient Greeks, the Victorians etc, they used to believe that letting a certain amount of blood out of a persons body would cure them of a disease. Well it kind of works for me. temporarily.

Self harm isn't limited to just knives and razors.
burning/scalding/branding oneself
overdoses to harm
bone breaking
punching/kicking walls or other objects to hurt one self
interfering with wound healing
scratching oneself
biting oneself
embedding objects in the skin
self-hitting
headbanging
excessive nailbiting
skin picking
hair pulling
Sometimes eating disorders
excessive drinking
drug use
Self harm is a small word with a broad definition.
