Well I'm going to an epic 8 and a half hour show/festival type thing in about two and a half weeks and I presume that there will be moshing there... I've never moshed before and I haven't been in a mosh pit so tell me what it's like and how to survive and what to do
The lineup is:
Bullet for My Valentine
Seether
Eagles of Death Metal
Enter Shikari
KONGOS

Do not fall. Whatever you do. Do. Not. Fall. Make sure your shoes are on tight.. if you're wearing converse, double knot them, and don't let the laces touch the ground much. Someone will step on them, you will fall, and you will get trampled.
As for what to do.. It's pretty simple. You'll pushed, and you just kinda... push back, I guess. Just go with the flow. As soon as you're in it, you'll know what to do.
A friend of mine moshed at a Seether concert once and he got stuck in it, got reallyyy beat up. So I imagine the pits are gonna be pretty brutal with this lineup. Good luck

Like the person above said, don't fall. Also, don't wear any loose jewlery. And if you wear glasses, try to keep them on. Or get a friend that's not going to be in the pit to hold on to them for you. My buddy lost a shoe and got his glasses broken once. It sucked. Great show though :P

well one thing is, they are NOT a joke, you can seriously get hurt, if you can't take getting punched, kicked, and pushed around, stay out of them, and prepare to be very sore the next day, I was really sore after warped tour, if you can't handle that, I suggest staying to the side/back and watching the show.

you can "mosh" and just stay out of the circle(usually starts about 6 rows back in the center). thats where the shit goes down. most people just bounce and shit.

You'll be fine. None of those bands have what would be referred to as "real" mosh pits anyway. You'll just be having the diet-coke of mosh pits :P

Holy.... WHERE IS THIS CONCERT!?!?! That's a sick lineup. My recommendations are to stay out of the way of people a lot bigger than you, try not to fall, if you get hurt or feel tired get out of the pit, if you see someone fall help them up, tie your shoes tightly, don't bring in a phone or wallet, and don't wear loose clothing or hats/glasses. Good luck

First, may I say that I'm fucking jealous?
Second, the "do not fall" advice is a little bit of an exaggeration. People will help you up if you do fall. Remember, actually being part of the pit is not compulsory, so don't do it if you don't want to.
As for what to wear, no baggy clothing. Nothing that will hinder your movement. Nothing that you really care about. No jewelry, especially nothing like a spiked bracelet that can hurt someone else. Don't wear a hat, and try to bring as few personal belongings with you as possible because they can very easily get stolen and/or damaged.
Now, how to mosh... just throw yourself around. Swing your arms, in circles if you want to. You can also do kicks. If you feel stupid, you're probably doing it right (physically, not mentally.) Prepare to get banged up a lot, and drink plenty of water. It's vigorous exercise, and you'll be lucky if you manage to keep going for even a minute.
Good luck, and have a brutal time \m/

I know it's late and all but you should never do that in a pit. It's not even moshing, it's hardcore dancing and it's retarded. If you do that at a gig that isn't full of Hardcore/Deathcore bands you'll get your ass kicked by one of the real metal guys.

Moshing is fun for like the first two minutes but then someone punches you hard in the stomach and you're like, "What the fuck man". Next thing you know you're stuck in this headache ride of crazy people throwing everyone around while angry grindcore music is playing.
Maaaan I'm too old for that stuff at the good ol' grindcore shows. I'll just sit in the back sipping my ice water instead. That's as much as this geezer can rock on anymore.

Moshing is fun, and it all depends on the crowd for how dangerous it will really be. From what I've heard, the crowds for the show you were at can be ruthless. Most shows I've gone to the crowds are the type that try to do as little damage as possible while still having one hell of a time (the type of crowd that picks you up when you get knocked down).
