A factory in Taiwan has begun production of components for Apple's eagerly awaited iPhone 5, expected to go on sale this autumn.
Pegatron - one of Apple's normal suppliers - has begun production of the new phone already, according to a report in DigiTimes.
The manufacturer will also be working on a smaller iPad later in the year.
Details of the upcoming handset are scant, although it is expected to have a larger screen than the current iPhone.
The new iPhone will have an even thinner screen thanks to advances in LCD manufacturing, according to reports.
The latest Apple gadget will feature ‘in-cell technology’ which has touch sensors in the screen instead of another layer on top as it is now.
Further sources in Apple's supply chain confirmed that the tech giant will drop the wide dock connector used in the company's gadgets for the best part of a decade in favour of a smaller one, a change likely to annoy the Apple faithful but which could be a boon for accessory makers.
The iPhone 5, Apple's next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will come with a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the proprietary 30-pin port ‘to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom’, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
That would mean the new phone would not connect with the myriad of accessories such as speakers and power chargers that form part of the ecosystem around iPods, iPads and iPhones, without an adaptor.
That means new business, analysts say.
‘It represents an opportunity for accessory vendors,’ said Pete Cunningham, London-based analyst at technology research firm Canalys. ‘The iPhone connector has been a standard for a long time now and I would expect the same to be true for a new connector, should Apple change it as expected.’
Apple did not immediately reply to an emailed request for comment.

Can't wait!!!! I'm eligible for an upgrade, Verizon will give me $250 for my 32gb 4S, so if the 32gb 5 is $300, I'll be a happy camper!

iPhone 5 and iPad mini release on September 12th
The iPhone and the iPad are arguably the two biggest technology products of the last decade - but for two years we have been offered merely revisions and tweaks to Apple's range.
But this may all be about to change, with Apple expected to debut the brand new 'iPhone 5' (although it is expected to be called simply 'iPhone') and the much-rumoured iPad Mini in San Francisco in just six weeks' time.
The iPhone is due for its first radical refresh since it launched in 2007, and it is expected to be bigger than ever - at least in terms of the screen-size, which is expected to get a half-inch bump into the 4" range.
Sources also say the iPad Mini will also be debuted on September 12th - offering an almost-pocket-friendly seven-inch variant to its larger brother.

How so? The 32gb 4s on contract was $300, The 5 would be the same price if not less. The Verizon trade in program offered me $265 for my current 4s, so the prices are in fact, correct.

How long ago did they offer you $265?
Technology advances quickly, so if they offered you $265 at the time you bought the device, they'll probably only give you around $50 by the time the iphone 5 is released.

I just checked online on Verizon's trade in program, a iPhone 4s 16GB that starts up and the display works and the screen isn't cracked has an appraised valued of $252.00 dollars.

Wow, that's surprising. I wish gamestop had trade in values like that.

And you all thought I was crazy (awaiting apology) I know that it'll probably crash to such a small amount, so I'm hoping to try and time it perfectly. The appraisal is guaranteed for 30 days, my phone is in PERFECT condition btw, so I'll probably end up trading my 4s in early, even if it means breaking out the old bold for a few weeks :P

No apology needed. You never mentioned that it was on a contract.

"Eligible for an upgrade" Kinda figured it was understood that it's obviously on a contract..

I still don't understand how people can spend so much money on a new phone with a few minor changes when their current phone is still new and works fine.

If it means I'm spending $35 to go from a 4S to a 5, I think it's plenty worth it. Also, I really don't see how you wouldn't think I'm on a contract, I said I was hoping the 32GB 5 was $300, I don't know anybody that could get it at that price without a contract in the first place, As far as I know, most ever single person I've ever met always buys a phone on contract, so i guess it's just natural to assume everybody would think it's not some radical event to go on contract. I guess we're just gonna agree to disagree..

If you were interested in technology, those minor changes would mean a lot.

That doesn't mean it makes sense to spend more money on a new phone just because you're "interested".

Then why does anyone spend money on anything? Because they're interested, right? Because they like the product, or the new technology put into the product, right?
If you don't buy things because you like them, then you must not own much.
Regardless, i'm exciting for the release of the iphone 5 because of the new technology. If you don't buy things because you like them, well that's your way of doing things.

Right. Sure I like the iPhone and it's corresponding technology, and if I'd buy one if I could. But if I already had an iPhone 4S that I bought last October, I wouldn't go out to buy an iPhone 5 when it came out just because it's new, even if I did like it.

I really can't stand the iOS software(I've had an iPhone for maybe 2-3 years) so hopefully the new phone has something to spark my interest. Otherwise I'll stick with my currect Windows Phone:)
