Recently, I've been getting calluses on my hands, after lifting handweights. How do you avoid this? What do you guys do to avoid this?

Appreciate any help :)

To avoid calluses I use gloves it helps because there is no direct contact with the grips that are on weights

Yup, you need gym gloves. You should find them at any sport equipment store.

Calluses shouldn't really be avoided, because they make your hands tougher and you'll be able to handle more things that extend way beyond weights, without your hands becoming raw

Both of the main points brought up here are pretty valid: If you only care about avoiding calluses then go right ahead, buy gloves (can't really recommend brands, sorry) but also, the calluses are a natural response and will make you better able to handle real life situations.

Good god is this what we've come to today avoid Calluses on hands at all costs?

You are a guy, guys are supposed to have tough hands.Read Brooks Kubiks book Dinosaur Training on the subject it's one of the best books on strength training.

I'm gay but even I think that a guy avoiding or complaining about Calluses on the hands is one of the most decidingly whimpy and unmanly things on earth.

Only girls should have soft hands!

The thing I have against gloves is I have small hands already, and I find it just makes it harder to get a good grip on some kit because I can't close my grip around the bar or whatever.

I don't mind the callouses they're useful, also I play guitar and I'd be pretty f***ed trying to play my steel string or electric if I didn't have callouses on my finger tips. (And this is also speaking as a somewhat less than butch gay guy too, since the PP mentioned it :P)

So yeah, don't become one of these guys who try too hard by wearing all the right gear, but if you need em eg for safety because you have sweaty palms when you're working out, get some ones with a good gripping surface (eg suede leather).

Don't worry about them and until you do crazy high weights don't wear gloves either because the skin will just build up overtime from the calluses.

Calluses always seem worse when they are just starting to build up they won't bother you much soon. Anyway I wouldn't recommend gloves if your just starting out the weights you will be lifting it's just not worth the bother, besides you don't want to be that guy with all the gear an no idea!

yeh having small hands when it comes to finding gloves can be a pain I have a cousin he's 39 and he stopped looking for gloves because all he could every find was a medium since and he needed small,so he sai d"i just sucked up and built my gloves the manly way one workout at a time.
I'd hate to be the sorry wretch he ever openhanded slapped!:D
