Phil watched the desperate mother pump her teenaged daughter’s chest as blood soaked her shirt. The teen sucked air in bursts, unable to take full breaths.
“Keep awake,” her sobbing mother said. “Keep awake.”
Phil looked at his watch, as he waited for help to arrive. Ten minutes passed. Then 20. Then 30.
“She was sucking air,” said Phil, who did not want to give his last name. “Then she took her last two breaths, real quick, then stopped.”
She died. So did a man in his early 20s after a Scarborough gun battle at around 10:40 p.m. Monday night that left 22 more — including a toddler, who is now in stable condition — wounded.
One of the deceased was identified Tuesday by community members as 14-year-old Shyanne Charles.
“So far we have been able to confirm that 19 people were transported from this location by ambulance to various hospitals throughout the Toronto region for treatment of gunshot wounds,” said Toronto police chief Bill Blair, speaking to reporters a few hours after the shooting on Danzig St., near Morningside Ave. and Lawrence Ave. E.

Honestly, this just disgusts me. I'm not going to be naïve and say this shouldn't have happened because guns don't exist in Canada. They do. But a lot of kids here grow up being taught how safe Canada is, that's just what we're told. Hell, I even live in an area that's had its fair share of violence. But it's only July and there have been 80 deaths due to shootings in the city of Toronto. For us, that's a lot.
I'm not that active when it comes to politics or controversial subjects such as gun laws but for god's sake, a TODDLER went to hospital because of this. A 14-year-old girl was killed. That will never be right, ever. It's also easy to say: well, it was a shooting, they happen when it's in America because of my personal opinions about the country and the fact it's not practically in my area, approximately 30 minutes away.
Not to mention, my mother is horrified. It's a good thing I don't go out much in the first place.
