View Full Version : 12 shot dead at 'Dark Knight Rises' screening in Aurora, Colorado
Error 404
July 20th, 2012, 09:36 AM
Tragedy struck the town of Aurora, Colorado early this morning, as a gunman opened fire at a movie theater during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.
At the moment, 12 people are confirmed dead and 50 wounded as a result of the incident.
According to various witness accounts and police reports, the suspect tossed some kind of smoke bomb into the theater and opened fire in front of the screen. He was reportedly wearing a gas mask and a bullet proof vest and carrying at least a rifle and a handgun.
The unidentified, alleged murderer is in his early 20s, a police spokesman says, and did not put up a fight when apprehended.*
“We will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family,” said President Obama in a statement, adding:
“All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come,” said Obama, promising he would do everything in his power to bring those responsible to justice.
“We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded."
Aurora is a Denver suburb and is approximately 13 miles from Littleton, Colorado, the site of the Columbine High School shooting in April 1999.
*UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as a 24-year old named James Holmes.

Do you not understand this? 12 people are dead, over fifty injured, some critically. They are real people, not on a screen, not in a movie. Clearly, not everyone is the hero like you are. People don't carry firearms everywhere. They should have no reason to. People aren't going to be shooting wildly if they had firearms anyway; they would do more harm than good. Even though you seem to have some obsession with guns, telling yourself they are good just proves to be wrong over and over. Here's an example. This man had three firearms, not even just one; and that's fine. It shouldn't be.

I understand it perfectly i think you are the one that does not. This isnt a game or a movie. this is real life. Think about it. if you carry a gun and you go into a place and this happens you could find cover. sure your chances of hitting him the head are slim to none but there is that little bit of a chance. There are people than bad people in the US. if all the good people in america carried guns there would be a lower murder/ crime rate. guns are an implement of self defense. i could defend my self with a knife but if someones shooting at me my chances of fighting him with a knife and living are extremly small and very unlikely. think about it...

I'm not going to turn this thread into a debate, but I'll say this. Think about what would happen if everyone was able to have a gun. No restrictions. Just think beyond the world of yours where guns are "good." Weapons of destruction are just that, destruction. If everyone in that theater started to open fire, it would become a massacre. That's all I'm saying, because I know you won't listen anyway.

What if everyone carried guns and opened fire on this guy, though? Then there would be far more than 'a couple' who got killed in the cross fire. I don't really know how you can say more guns reduce problems. I know you're taking a utilitarianism approach to this dilemma, and with other dilemmas there's a good chance I would too, but it doesn't seem right in this circumstance. I just don't think you can condone people carrying guns or knives considering the risk and danger that comes with them. If people think it's okay to carry these weapons, then there's going to be a lot more incidents, not less.
This is very sad indeed. Knowing that this guy dropped out of a Medicine Degree at University only last month suggests this guy might have been suffering from some kind of depression. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy pleaded to insanity at his trial. He would have professional analysis carried out to see if he really was insane, though, so I guess it wouldn't matter if he did plead insane. I think it will be interesting to see how his trial does play out, though. I was just looking up capital punishment history, and it turns out only one person has ever been executed in the state of Colorado. As far as I can tell, the death penalty hasn't been abolished in Colorado yet, so I would think this guy is very likely to be the next one on death row. This really is disturbing what he's done, so he deserves whatever's coming to him.

Just because one of the victims said that people should carry guns to protect themselves, that doesn't mean people actually should. A response like that is likely to just be out of shock from what happened; it is far from neutral.
Even if you say it is a 'good person' who owns a gun, that doesn't mean they are a responsible, trained possessor of that gun. People panic, and when they do, they react in hasty, often thoughtless ways. Even good people make mistakes and you have to remember how dangerous these weapons are and what they're capable of. One spur of the moment decision can do an unbelievable amount of damage.
Anyway, I think we're beginning to digress a little from the topic.

I woke up to this, and it was...I was like "woah" at first. It really didn't sink in until about an hour later, after I watched the news with my family. This is so sad and horrible, and stupid. Innocent people got hurt, innocent people were affected, and innocent people died in this. it makes me think, what if this was happening where I live, and my friends and family were there..if I were there? Some of my friends were at the local theater last night at around midnight, and I don't know what I would do if the shooting had taken place there. The stories from the survivors are horrible, and my heart goes out to them.
I remember one of the survivors talking about seeing a 12 year old girl, laying on the theater floor lifeless. She wasn't much younger than me, and it isn't fair that I get to live on while she got the chance taken away from her. There was also a story of a little six year old girl who got shot, and I'm really hoping that she's okay. I mean, I wished that everybody involved was okay..but that's obviously not the case.
My friend lives in Colorado, and I'm really hoping she wasn't there early this morning. I haven't heard from her, but yet again she hasn't been on Facebook since Tuesday. I doubt that she was there, since she lives miles from Aurora, but I don't know I guess I'm paranoid.
I feel so bad for everybody involved. It really isn't fair, and I guess it makes me dislike the world a little bit more then I did yesterday.

This is so awful and sad. I feel so bad for everyone who went to have a fun time at the movies and ended up with one of the worst horrors of their lives. Next time you see a thread like this, just go on to the next thread. If you're so paranoid about having to carry a gun around on the OFF-CHANCE that someone might try to kill or injure you, why bother? Go and tell the people who've been affected by the entire thing that they should carry a gun from now on. So please, for your sake and others, just don't post anymore.

Well, last night at the dinner table was somewhat emotional. Let me explain.
During the meal my dad brought up the shooting. Then my idiot brother said he still wanted to see the movie. Right away, our mom said, "you're not going". Then she looks straight at me and says, "you're not going either".
So there was this awkward silence when I was clearing away the dishes (one of my chores). My mom then apologized and said, "I just don't want to lose you guys". Then she hugged me and kissed my cheek.
Yeah, lets just say I couldn't hold back the tears at that point. Moms sure can be weird sometimes, right?

That man has some serious mental issues. No one should just wake up one morning and just say to themselves "I'm going to kill as many people as I possibly can tonight". That's not normal. The fact that he was able to obtain all of these guns legally is just proving my point that guns need to be, if not outlawed, restricted MORE strictly. I don't feel safe living in a country where someone can just go into a store, ask for a gun, get it and kill people the very next day. There is just something wrong with that picture, if you ask me.

Guns arent the problem. If you ban guns the bad guys will still be able to get guns illegally. what we need to do is have more evaluations to the list of things to pass to get a gun.
You should need the following:
Valid ID
Full Background check
Psych evaluation
no criminal record(DUIs and speeding tickets dont count)

Are you really that cowardly to let two isolated incidents deter you from having fun? Jesus, if America is going to become a nation of pussies after these two incidents, I might just leave the country. The chances of your local movie theater going under any type of violent situation are so slim that you have more chances to be hit by lightning twice. Well I kinda am, but not enough to kill people!
