Should an Atheist get married weather it be to a religious, Agnostic, or other Atheist?

It's not up to us to decide who is to marry who. They can marry whomever they'd like; there are no rules. I don't really see how this could be a debate.

While I'm agnostic and don't believe in marriage... I think marriage has become less of a religious thing and more of a social convention. So, if they want to get married, why not? They don't have to have a ceremony, and if they do, it doesn't have to be with a priest in a church, and their vows don't have to be religious.
After all, marriage is pretty much just a piece of paper, a legal document. And of course, an emotional bonding blah blah blah. But religion doesn't have to be involved.

I agree that they should be free to marry who they want. Im a Christian, but i'd probably have to marry a non-Christian if i ever got married cuz i don't personally know any other gay Christians.

Wait. Marriage was/is religious?
I always was under the impression is was the unity of two people that love each other and vow to spend their lives together in sickness and health for better or for worse.

I'll never be married in a church and never by a Priest/Pastor/Minister/person of the church. I'll have a ceremony, even if it's weeks after being wed in a courthouse.

Of course there's more to a marriage than a piece of paper. I meant that more as it's a legal process. It's not a religious process. It can be, but it doesnt have to be.

People getting married should be equally yoked. Not saying that they can't but it is a good idea that they are.

I love it how Christians like to see marriage as something religious.

why can't an atheist get married? marriage isn't supposed to religious...

if I marry I would not get married in a church (obviously)

so yeah, atheists should marry whoever they want, just like everyone else (adults)

Marriage doesn't come from the bible. Only ignorance and hatred does though, but that's a different topic. Religion is on the road to becoming extinct. And while I will celebrate that day, marriage will not change. In fact it would be more tolerant. Us homosexuals will finally have the right to get married every where on Earth. Inter racial couples will be able to get married without racism and discrimination. Religion has been holding back marriage freedoms from minority groups for a long time.

I'm pretty sure the religious aspect of it was like if you're married you can have sex without forsaking God or some bullshit like that.

Atheism and marriage are as connected as Atheism and peanut butter. Marriage itself has nothing to do with religion. People have the option to include religious shit, but ultimately marriages are just legal contracts.

Marriage is an institution that has its roots in religion in most modern countries, like it or not. I'm as much of a Jesus-basher as the next man but at least don't sound ridiculous.

Marriage was originally very much a religious institution and civil marriages came much later. Where I live, in the fifties, it was unthinkable to get married anywhere outside of the Church. Those are the facts. Marriage as a concept in most occidental countries has religious roots. Nobody cares what cavemen or the Ancient Greeks did. Even if a kind of marriage or ritualized union came before, it is religious marriage that has shaped the institution up to its modern form.

All the stuff about marriages : an official, trading rings, brides and grooms in nice clothing was borne out of the tradition followed in religious marriage. You'll see none of this in the Bible, but it still grew out the application of religious marriage, like law and jurisprudence. Saying civil marriage has no link to religion is like saying a child has no link to his father.

Your logic is backwards. The concept of modern marriage is not civil marriage + religion, it's religious marriage - religion. Why can't we get married by simply drafting a contract on a cocktail napkin, getting it notarized and signed then filed in whatever government office these things go? Instead we borrowed the whole ritual of religious marriage, removed God, Jesus and the priest, added an official and voilą. You're carrying a part of that tradition whether you get married civilly or not.

With that said and done, civil marriage is entirely non-denominational, so who the Hell cares? I don't need to make a vow before God to cherish my wife to do so. I do, however, think that it is 1) a landmark in one's life and 2) a sweet way to show love and commitment to your loved one. I'm going to get married, but very far from any child molester.

In the end, can it, anybody can do what they want.
