So I have quite a problem. My computer is getting old and noisy and it needs to be replaced. My parents found a way to get a Macbook Pro 13" (The one with the 2.5GHz Intel i5 and the 500gig harddrive) at a special way that it is affordable.
The other option is to get a desktop computer at about half the price of the Mac. I currently have a desktop and I have a good screen for it too.
I cannot really decide between the two and I have been weighing up the pros and cons and currently I am shifting more towards the Mac, but I am still not 100% fixed in any direction.

The PC I would be getting would have an i3 or i5 with 4gigs of RAM and I am unsure of the graphics card as I would not be building it myself.

I think the Mac would be better but perhaps I am wrong. Tell me what you think

That aside, if you really want mobility, why not get a nice Windows laptop?

Windows.
All Macs are overpriced pieces of junk.
I don't care if you have a $10,000 laptop that's skinnier than a twig.
A 2001 Dell is better than it.

Actually, not true but whatever.

I have to admit, Macs can be decent machines, especially if you can get one at an affordable price. However, it all depends on what you want to do with a computer. Are you looking to do serious gaming? If so, Windows. Are you looking to do music production, video editing, Photoshop? If so, Mac. A desktop, with the right parts, will blow away any Macbook or laptop, still.

If you need something that you can carry around, and you're not looking to do any gaming or programming, I see no problem with getting a Macbook. It's your money. If you really want it, go for it. If you're looking for something that is powerful and you don't mind being stationary, build a desktop. You can get a really great machine for less than $1000.

I hate Macintosh computers with a passion.
No offense, if that can offend you.

Macs are the best computers you can get. Usually, people who say they suck aren't used of how macs are, or they're jealous that they cannot afford one.

I've got a Mac, and I can tell you they aren't the best computer out there. It's all based on what you are looking for. Laptops and Desktops are very different, so nobody here can really give the best advice; it just depends on what you'd use more.

Your reasoning, please?

That aside, It really comes down to what you want to use it for. I find that Desktops, regardless if it's a macintosh or any other brand, works better for gaming.
However, if you explore purposes which I call the "social person", where you need room to store some movies, tv shows, have a decent webcam and mic for skype calls, and wifi to run various websites, definitely go with a portable. Personally, i've had better experiences with "social" computing on a Mac. The built in software on a mac is just more tailored for those purposes.

But that's my rant, and I'm just saying whatever floats your boat. If you are more of the 'social' type I described, definitely go for the Mac!

The Macbook Pro sounds a lot more like a 'safer' option for me. You don't have to contribute anything yourself, it's easier to set up and go. Also, it is portable. But it really does boil down to what you're planning to use it for. Unless you really want to do gaming or something that requires a lot of power, the Macbook is the way to go.
