Right so, you tech people can help me. I have an old Sony Trinitron 4:3 TV and a PS3 (from when they first came out). All the software is up to date and all that crap.

Now I recently bought Mass Effect 2 and Game of Thrones for it. Before this, all my games showed up nice and pretty and fullscreen in a 4:3 format and have caused me no problems. Works for me. However, my two new games come up as 16:9, widescreen, with letterboxing. Normally this wouldn't bother me but the TV is small enough and the letterboxing makes the text even smaller and well, I can't read it, even if I have my nose up against the screen.

Makes for playing these games difficult. I've gone on Google and they've only ever given me solutions for DVD/Blu-ray fixes, not games themselves. (Not sure if using the Blu-ray fix will work seeing as the game discs are Blu-ray, going to try but my PS3 is currently running updates.) Has anyone had this problem and knows how to fix it?

Don't say "buy a new TV", I'm broke.

Have you tried the safe display mode?

Turn off and unplug the ps3. Plug it in then hold down (I have a slim so I say hold down, for you it's probably 'touch') the power button until you hear a second beep, then let go. Then, let the ps3 automatically adjust the display settings and the settings you get should crop the game into 4:3. I had this error once on an old TV with rockband, and it fixed it, so it might work for you.

You could also call Sony, they are pretty helpful.

Several gamers have had this issue with 5th gen consoles on older standard definition TVs. Sadly, the only way to really fix it is to get a new TV, from all I've read. Maybe you can try messing around with your PS3's video settings and see what happens.

Well, I'll try that one fix or call Sony but I had a feeling a new TV was really going to be the only option. I mean, nothing is really made in 4:3 anymore but I really do like my little TV. D: I mean, we've had this thing forever.

Sentimental value means nothing when it comes to getting the best display out of your console. A small 19" or 24" HDTV would be a great buy for a cheap TV to play PS3 on.

Lol, I know but... define "cheap".

They go on sale all the time around Christmas, but under $300 easily.
