I've just taken back a netbook that I gave to my parents, cause they're bad at looking after it, so now it's mine. Anyways, I'm in a situation at the moment, I'm not sure which operating system I should keep on this. My first priority for this netbook is to carry my documents with me and edit them at home and at school, so I would need a OS that isn't battery hungry, and supports a word processor. I've tried Windows 7 but it feels to...I don't really know, it feels odd on a netbook. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron Mini 10. Windows XP and Vista both suck, so there's no way I'm using them. I could install Chromium OS, but it doesn't seem to be practical. I'm looking into installing Joli OS or Ubuntu, but there are some windows apps I would like to run, and Wine isn't really capable of some. And well, there's Windows 8 but what's the point of that? The metro apps are not capable of running on this 1024x600 screen resolution, and when enabling downscaling in the registry, allowing a 1024x768 resolution, it makes everything ugly and stretched. What do you guys think I should install?

I'd say OpenSUSE or Ubuntu in your case, but I think you know my opinion on what I think the best OS is :)

If it's a netbook, I see little use in tampering with the OS. Not worth your time. Windows 7 Starter is a perfectly fine OS for any netbook if you ask me. It works great on my netbook, especially if all I'm doing is a word document or school stuff.

Ubuntu, it comes with the complete libre office and its free. it also looks nice on a netbook aswell, I installed it on my sister's netbook and it looked great. its about as power hungery as windows 7, but it depends on your hardware too. try it and see how long it lasts comapared to ubuntu.
